Whats the best food and conditions to ensure my fish show their brightest prettiest colours, im currently feeding them tetra flakes and spirilina flakes, however over the last few weeks the kenyi have started to "dull" a little and a couple loosing stripes, however by some of the orange tinge starting to show on them im guessing they are the males and starting to change colour?

A female will help the male colour up.

Those going orange/yellows are males. Those that go light blue/ little yellow/orange are sub dominant males.

If they dare go orange the dominant male will beat them up, :( if they stay blue then the male will try to knock them up.

Flake frenzy, Cichlid Flake. by HBH. Is good for colouring up fish. Mysis shrimps, Spirulina based products are good.

There is a product here with a bad name, if anyone mentions it I will pm you. Don't want to bag a brand publicly.

I read a study on red zebras that were fed a variety of foods. (6 types)

Red zebs can & tend to loose their colour over time.

The best results were found in 2 groups.

(1) Fed minced whole shrimps & spirulina

(2) Fed minced whole shrimp, spirulina & parprika powder.

Another food group had paprika in it, the conclusion was whole shrimps & sirulina worked best.

The ingredients used for the home made frozen food,(works out cheaper in the long run to if you have a few fish to feed.

(Best Jamie Oliver voice)

1kg whole shrimps

1kg green peas

10ml Spirulina Powder

100 grams gelatin powder

10 drops of concentrated multivitamins. (for birds/pets/or children)

Blend the whole lot(except gelatin)in a blender to a paste.

Make up gelatin to instructions on packet. (no lumps)

Combine the gelatin & frozen mix.

Pour onto flat trays, place in fridge.

The hardened mixtre then can be cut into pieces of a convenient size, placed into plastic bags then throw into the freezer.

Frenchy :D

Very important with Justins mix is NOT to use anymore then 10ml Spirulina Powder as it can cause some black spots to appear on the fish which generally go away when you stop feeding the spirulina powder

Besides this it is a good cheap food

Also make sure there are no lumps left in the gelatin

About this recipe,

Can anybody elaborate a little more, as i'm worried about giving the fishies the wrong things!

Whole Shrimp - Do I blend them shells, head and all?

Spirulina Powder - I could only get spirulina powder mixed with ALFALFA AND BARLEY GRASS. Product is called "spirulina power" by red seal

Only multivitamin I could find is Multi Vitamin & Mineral for kids by Healtheries, and its in tablet form, would this be ok, and in regards to measuring this and the Spirulina in ml's would I be safe to say a crushed teaspoon of it is 5ml?

Cheers in advance! Hope to make soon before the shrimp go off or my girl eats them!!! :D
