They were in a tank with alot of other fish, and being relatively new and dumb, I had no idea what they looked like. Well, it seems neither did the woman working there! She ummed and ahhed awhile, and finally caught one. I bought it home, not entirely sure it was a bristlenose, cause I couldn't see any real bristles, and it looked similar to my peppered cory, though a different colour. I looked it up on the net today (first chance I've had), and it's a panda cory. This same woman a few weeks ago sold me a couple of platties. I already had 2 (which I'd bought from the very knowledgable man who works there), so knew what I was getting. 1 was definately a platy, but the other I wasn't sure about as it looked different and was a different colour. Now I'm wondering if it might be a female swordtail, as there were also swordtails in the same tank. Is there any easy way to tell? I've read Platties can come in various colours and even body shapes. Have tried to take a few photos but the fish weren't very oblidging! Phillz Posted August 30, 2005 Report Share Posted August 30, 2005 That is very annoying....the only advice I can give is to do some research on the fish you want to purchase....then you can have some idea of what you are looking for. As for platties and swordtails, I think they can interbreed. And you can get them in a variety of colours. Can you get pics of your fish at all? Faran Posted August 30, 2005 Report Share Posted August 30, 2005 Wow, another LFS that has staff that don't know what's going on. Sorry about that happening but you really should have known what a BN looked like before going to buy one. Here's a pic (though I'm sure you know by now!). A baby will look like a miniature version of this without the bristles on the nose. Take a second and check the tank to see if there's any that have unusual patterns, spots or colouration. Sometimes this can indicate stress but other times it can make the difference between a regular everyday BN and a BN that's worth over $100! Normally LFSes around here charge more for BNs than corys but it'd never hurt to find out before you go back demanding an exchange for a cheaper fish! I have come across some who seem to really know what they are talking about, some who will admit they know nothing, and then there are those who pretend to know everything! Not only about fish but with cats and dogs, I heard one girl tell a lady that parvo was a bacteria and would be killed with anti-biotics. Anyone with animal experience knows that parvo is a deadly virus that will kill your puppy in a matter of days. So I figured if they don't know the basics about main stream animals what else don't they know about the more specialised animals? Though I have been given pretty good advice by some of the older staff it is always best to get info from a lot of different sources then you can draw you own conclusions.
