HelifaxNZ
I'm interested to find out how people cycle their new tanks. The obvious one is to use live rock, but have people also used pure ammonia to cycle the tank too? I have experience in freshwater tanks and have been cycling using pure ammonia. Just wanting to know whether you can do the same for Saltwater, and whether you can have live rock and use ammonia at the same time. Very interested to hear your comments. Thanks Helifax. Brianemone
most of the rock you buy will have some fairly nasty stuff in it any way so you dont really need anything else, some people will chuck in a mussel or something to kick it off
SteveA
Currently cycling about 35Kg of rock in a 200L drum and added a little of the cats food to help it along (cat's don't know). Steve

suphew
I assume you know there is cycling the tank, and then there is "cycling" that tank?? The first type is similar to cycling a fresh water tank, ie getting the nitrogen cycle going, the second about 9 or so months long in which you will get all the different algal blooms (brown, green, hair, etc). Good cycled live rock can speed this up.
Brianemone
in aucks is almost as easy to find a good supply of live rock as it is to find base rock
