Pegasus
Interesting visual description of the changes that your tank goes through during the early stages of being set up. http://www.bestfish.com/newtank3.html Make a copy and keep it handy Bill. shauntilyard
just thinking about cycling, does plant matter give off any ammonia. Could you cycle with plants?
Alan
You don't need sacrifice fish for the process. A piece of steak, a shrimp, or anything in that line that will start rotting, and therefore give off ammonia will do. Don't use fatty pieces. Plants don't work. Wok
A piece of fish also works well
Faran
Or just "feed" the tank like you would if fish were in there. Flake food works, but live/frozen foods work better.
fishy family
what a good suggestion of just 'feeding the tank' when i set up my tank I put in my neons feeling that they were little test pilots
