wasp
All my pods mysteriously vanished a few months ago, I would like to try to re-establish some. If someone could syphon a few into a jar for me, I would be happy to give a frag in exchange
jetskisteve
I'll give it a bash no frag needed

SteveA
A word of advice for future reference. If you want to keep pods, don't put a Regal Angel in the same tank.

cookie extreme
A word of advice for future reference. If you want to keep pods, don't put a Regal Angel in the same tank or copper bands, or mandarin, or scooter blennies, or... or... or... or... or... or.. most fish if i think about it.
Pies
I have scooter blenny, mandarin, sixline wrasse in my tank. My tank is teaming with pods and mysidd, although its not clear if the are establised in the tank or only end up their from the refugium or the sump. I think they are established in the tank though. chimera
so is mine, i guess the size of ones tank makes a big difference. most definately, more room = greater population = faster reproduction! i'd be keen on a heap of pods to help kick start a larger population. i seem to have enough, but you never can tell? Brianemone
ive noticed that my tank at work with no predation has lots of pods and they are getting quite big, i sruggle to see any in the tank at home other than when the sixline wrasse is smashing them against the rocks. chimera
aye carumba,... noticed my mandarin tonight is looking EXTREMELY thin. poor little bugger. the main tank used to be loaded with pods and he was starting to get quite fat... but as of late he's gone backwards. i will try and move him to the refugium but that doesnt seem to look overly populated either at the moment? so, im in the same boat as wasp. anyone with a good pod population they are willing to share, swap for frags or take cash for let me know. wasp
Chimera a guy on RC posted he got some cyclops, (not cyclopeez) They are available frozen at Hollywood, and put them in his mandarin was picking them off the rocks. Cyclops are fresh water copepods, the mandarin realised they were food even though they were dead. I've never had a mandarin myself as I've never had a decent pod supply. The one good thing about your declining pod population is it means you are nailing your nutrients.
chimera
thanks wasp i'll try it The one good thing about your declining pod population is it means you are nailing your nutrients really? why is that? do they live off nutrients? still, anyone wanting to help me kick off a larger pod population please let me know. the refugium seems to be reasonable, but still not enough. hard part is catching him! i might setup a little 3 footer separate to the rest of the system, chuck some sand and live rock in and use that as a backup breeding ground! thought about it last night, i can build a stand under the refugium to fit it in easily enough. can double as my clown breeding tank later too speaking of which, have you decided to start breeding yet pies? manage to get rotifiers yet? wasp
thanks wasp i'll try it really? why is that? do they live off nutrients? What they eat requires nutrients. The best thing to breed pods is a dirty tank. What you suggest about the 3 footer has merit. Pies is the man to talk to about this, of course his tank is very clean, but what he has is basically a refugium in which they breed, a safe harbour for them. I am sure he can chip in here with some good info.

SteveA
Must have been late in the day. I was actually thinking about zoos being wiped out by Regals, rather than pods, but I think the fish has been sampling the pods as well. My mandarin has never managed to wipe them out but I think he is having to search a bit harder for them now. Steve
chimera
tried to get the mandarin tonight, almost got 'em, but the net i had got hooked on an acro almost ripping it, by the time i got it unhooked he sneaked under a rock... arghhh!!! need that fish trap again! next water change im going to take out some water from the main tank and put it into the little 3 footer i have and see if I can brew up a massive pod population. i can at least empty them into the main tank every now and then or use it as qt tank in emergencies. i got a spare heater, lights, sand, rock and a pathetic little skimmer so no harm in trying. is it ok using an airstone for a bit of aeration? whats best to add to the tank to feed the pods or will the natural build up of algae be sufficient to feed them? Pies
aye carumba,... noticed my mandarin tonight is looking EXTREMELY thin. poor little bugger. the main tank used to be loaded with pods and he was starting to get quite fat... but as of late he's gone backwards. Shame. Mine is so fat, I think its unhealthy, hope it doesn't get heart diesase or something. Wasp - I've seen a few comments from you in the past saying my tank is 'very clean'. Not sure if I would agree with this, you will have to come and see it to know what I mean. I would say its no cleaner, or dirty than any other tank i've seen. All pretty normal and standard I would say. On the pods thing, my tank is TEAMING with them, as is my refugium, and my sump has some mysidd but not many (probably because of high water flow). I rarely feed my fish (1-2 times a week), but they pods and mysidd are doing great. I think the seceret is to let their numbers grow before introducing predators, once its all established. My theory anyway. Good luck to you both. Pie
chimera
cool, can you syphon some out, cryogenically freeze them and ship up to auck's dude?
Pies
Last time JetSkiSteve was down he took a jar away, we just syphoned them off the glass. Still though you have a refugium, I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem (is this the right time to bring up skimming after the refugium?). chimera
(is this the right time to bring up skimming after the refugium?). was waiting for that one. still, i dont even see many pods in the fuge, fullstop. im sure they dont all go down the overflow. Pies
I don't clean my glass often, and I can seen them crawling over the glass, maybee 4-10 per square inch. So lots. There are different types, I get little cricket things, small (no bigger than 1mm), these are the ones the mandarin eat, then the larger cricket things (that are curled up and look like fleas), most of the fish eat them, often you see dead shells floating around the tank, they must shead their skin. Then I get the mysidd shrimp, they like lower flow, the dark, and can swarm in clouds some nights. Pie
wasp
Wasp - I've seen a few comments from you in the past saying my tank is 'very clean'. Not sure if I would agree with this Pie Hmmm... I really cannot remember commenting on that in the past at all. Yesterdays comment was based on what you told me a few weeks back on the phone, and was meant as a compliment. Prior to that i had little knowledge of your tank.
