I have used some in my tank, mixed in with my other substrate. It does look nice. The Red Sea stuff is expensive. The other is supplied by Brooklands so any pet store should be able to order it in for you. Looks exactly the same, just not in a pretty bag.

Thanks for the feedback

any reason for having the bed so deep?

Hmm not really, shallower is better?

Depends what you are trying to achieve. If the substrate is for purely decorative purposes, shallow (20 mls) is best as it will not hold so much crud.

But if the purpose it to provide filtration and nitrate reduction, deeper (100 mls +) is best, although be aware that this will gradually accumulate and eventually release phosphate.

Your 40 mls is somewhere in the middle, better to go one way or the other, although having said that there is a heap of good tanks with a substrate of a similar depth.

What wasp said. When I had sand, I would (usually) vacuum it every week too keep it clean. Of course it depends what your keeping. If it's a few fish and some soft corals no problem. But hard corals may not like an aged sand bed so much.
