Hiya,

My brother Todd joined the other day and I thought I'd set up my own account too. The amount of info. here is amazing.

I've just set up a 3ft tropical tank, so far it has 20 neon tetras, 5 glowing tetras (soon to be more), and 5 golden barbs. I really like the smaller tropical fish, although I'm sure I'll end up with another tank for bigger fish soon.... and then a tank for salt water, and then another tank for more smallies.... and so the addiction starts...

:)

Welcome Liam

I see you're already planning how your disease is going to progress. It's a wonderful disease but a tad hard on the money side.

Oh...MTS...is definitely an addiction

How big is your tank? When did you set it up?

This site is great and the people...well, as usual can't say enough good things about them :P

Take care,

Dolorosa

Hi Caryl,

Tank has been running a few months now. I've been adding the fish a few at a time (and I was lucky enough to acquire some stones from someone else's tank so I had it all running for a few weeks before adding any fish). The tank is 160 litres, I've read somewhere that you can have up to 1 inch of fish per gallon (American website so crazy imperial measurements). Not sure if Tetras count as an inch of fish though? I now have 30 fish and the tank still seems very empty...

I am not a fan of the "Inches of fish per gallon" theory as it is too full of variables (fish size and type, filtration, maintenance routine and shape of the tank for a start). If you want the metric version for tropicals, multiply length x breadth of the tank and divide the result by 25 to supposedly give you the maximum amount of fish in cm.

example: a 60L x 30W tank = 1800 divide by 25 = 72cm total

This is probably ok if you have a tank full of small to medium sized fish like the smaller barbs, rasboras and tetras etc, but 1 large 10cm full bodied fish (like an oscar or other cichlids) produces a lot more waste than 2 5cm fish.

For those of you wanting the cold water stocking theory, multiply the length and breadth of the tank and divide the result by 75 to give you the amount of fish you can keep in cm.

example 60L x 30W tank = 1800 divide by 76 = 23.6cm total of fish.

You have to remember to bear in mind the final adult size of the fish, not the current size of your cute little young addition.

Cheers for that Caryl, I thought there was probably more to it than that.

:)

Matheson Bay is in Leigh (1 hr north of Auckland). Todd and I run a video production company and with technology the way it is these days we can work from pretty much anywhere and Matheson Bay has to be one of the nicest spots in NZ :D
