deeveus
Added a new skimmer today after being told I cannot plumb a sump into my tank due to not being able to drill holes in the tank. I had a glass expert here and said that if holes were drilled there was a high likely hood of the glass shattering due to temp differences and pressure difference (due to glass type) Skimmer is American made, seems to be very high quality and very strong plastic. Cost was normally $99.95 but scored it for only $60!!! It has been designed to accomodate 90 gallons and tank is only 130litres lol! At the time of the photo's being taken the skimmer was in operation for only 10 minutes and below you will be able to see how much crap has been extracted already. I purchased a new pump to run it, way overkill for what is needed but it has a variable dial which can control the airflow as a pose to changing it manually via the taps on the skimmer itself. Pumps: Skimmer: Crap collected in about 10-15mins: May have a little too much air coming in, however same water level now as in the pic hours ago. suphew
I used to have a lee's skimmer that looks similar to this. If it is the same you have the water level too high, there should be a mark on the peice around where the upper air input goes. If you cant get the water level low enough because of the length of the skimmer, they are easy to take apart and cut a bit off the tube. If you run the water level too high you get wet foam, and clearish skimmate. The skimmate should look a bit like coke.
deeveus
Thanks suphew. The water level has stayed there all the time since installed yesterday and it is unbelieveable the amount of crap that it has extracted. This is a large lee's skimmer as you said. How often should I be cleaning the cup? Weekly ok? Another thing to add is that the water clarity is 100% better than less than 24 hours ago. suphew
The water level is set by how high you place the skimmer in the water. How often you clean depends on how quickly it gets dirty. But I would aim for a weekly clean of the collection cup, and monthly clean of the whole unit, don't forget you need to replace the wooden air stone every couple of months
