Disneyworld
Shock shock horror, I have discovered algae in my tank which I haven't seen in my 8 years of fishkeeping - related to the new area I moved to? Maybe... Instead of the "normal" green stuff which sticks to the side of your tank this green weirdo thing looks soft, long and stringy, has attached itself to the glass on one side, but floats the other side in the water. It came up very fast, I cleaned the tank only last week, and appears to grow at a monstrous rate. I will remove it tomorrow morning, but what is happening here, anyone know, its all over
chimera
probably green hair algae http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/algaecontrol/a/aa070403.htm the above is for saltwater aquariums but i would imagine the same rule applies.
Aqua
Time to buy some Flourish Excel and double-dose! It'll kill algae That or try Blackline Flying Fox / Siamese Algae Eaters... See HERE to ID them
jude
Not sure about the algae but are you coming to the dinner? Check the post about Wellington Dinner in the Off Topic forum I am looking forward to seeing you both again Cheers Jude
Snowman
Flourish Excel will control the algae but not quickly, i've been using it for a few weeks now in 3 tanks and gets very expensive, part of the problem is every time you do a water change its diluted down so you need to add more, i've heard the algae can be caused by an excess of nutrients which can be fixed with lots of water changes, but then it dilutes the Flourish Excel. I'm trying some Green-X which is supposed to absorb excess phosphate etc, had it in for a week and doesn't appear to be doing much. I'm wondering if the Green-X is absorbing the Flourish Excel. If anyone wants some of this algae i've got plenty to spare LMAO. (Thinking about the SAE, just got to get the right ones)
Aqua
But are you double-dosing Snowman? When I had a nasty hair algae problem, it was sorted pretty quickly when I double-dosed...
Snowman
Yes i am double dosing, thats why i've gone through $80 worth so far, from what i've heard should only take 2 weeks to kill it. Guess i'm special LMAO
HummingBird
Sure it couldn't be some Hyrda?
Snowman
My algae is black and definetly looks like BBA, it is slowly responding to Flourish Excel, i have to do plenty of water changes in my Gold Ancistrus tank to keep the fry alive so think that's what slowing down killing it. Warren
Check your phosphate level. I bet your new water supply has it in it.
Snowman
I've had some Green-X in for just over a week now, supposed to remove phosphate, is there anything better at removing phosphates? I'll get a test kit from LFS tommorrow and post a level. Thanks guys
Warren
I use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals 'Phosphate Remover'. It works very well. If you want to use this one get the 1105gram carton as it works out 1/3 the cost of buying it in the small packet. It says it's for ponds but its the same stuff in larger cheaper packaging...
