junglejim
Hi All, just up and running now with skimmer and pump. I was wondering how to set a skimmer up? Why is it adjustable? What does this adjust? Thanks
kinnadian
You basically need to adjust the flow so that you get a good column of bubbles and there is enough residence time for the bubbles to collapse at the top of the skimmer and produce skimmate in your cup. It will take some time to generate foam, sometimes skimmers days a week to settle before decent foam is produced.
junglejim
Thanks Kinna, I have it producing bubbles now, but it is filling the collection cup up very quickly. How do you get a happy medium? How long should it take before the cup fills? Thanks
Morcs
Turn the flow right down, remove the cup. Increase the flow until its at the point where its just about to overflow. Refit cup and it should be pretty close to where you want it

Ira
Thanks Kinna, I have it producing bubbles now, but it is filling the collection cup up very quickly. How do you get a happy medium? How long should it take before the cup fills? Thanks First thing would be to wait a week. Most new skimmers take a few days to get broken in, their behavior can change significantly as a bit of biofilm builds up in them.
junglejim
Thanks ira, any idea what the tube coming out of the bottom of the collection cup is for? Thanks

Ira
Thanks Ira, but nothing ever comes out of it. Have you tried removing the plug on the end? Otherwise you tell us what it is? All I have to go on is pictures on the internet.
junglejim
You are right Ira. I pulled it hard and it turns out it is just a plug in the end of the hose. Probably for a major overflow. Aquarium now set up and added dry rock today with fresh seawater. Lets see how we get on. I'm a bit worried about the circulation level. I had a 2000l per hour pump but drain couldnn't keep up so I added a valve and it looks pretty slow now.
