Totara
Hi all, Just last night I was talking to my cousin who picked up a big fish tank for $30 at the recycling center. Two of the panels are broken, bottom and one of the sides. He didn't know how to fix it and gave it too me for free! Along with two other tanks, I am not sure of their condition. They are both about 60 liters. The big tank he said is the size of my door, almost 2m long. Tomorrow I am heading out to pick them up, but I want to know, is it going to be worth it to fix? Will the glass cost be ridiculous? Thanks all, Will
camtang
Depending on the size you may be able to pick up a bit cheap second hand. Once you have the measurements it will help. A mate of mine has a bit of 10mm around 2m long hanging about so you may get lucky with that. Failing that, there is a glazer in Stoke that has a lot of glass at home and plenty of glass shops around and I suspect around the $100 mark is what you will be looking at. Totara
Is that glazier Fast Glass? I will have dimensions tonight, and glass thickness tomorrow. $100 doesn't sound too bad, it has some sort of integrated filter thing (I am guessing he means sump) which I will be able to check out tomorrow. All in all doesn't sound too bad! Is anyone able to give me a rough estimate on what running costs will be? Regards, Will
camtang
Nope, but I have heard they are pretty good. I think Veridian are the cheapest shop in town. Running cost will depend what you decide to do with your tank. I would suspect the most exspensive part with be your filter/pump. Fork out a bit more to start with and find a unit that has a lower power consumption (often they cost more to buy).

They told me it would be $240!!! I will assess the tank tomorrow. Will

P.S Nice to meet you the other night Good to meet you too That was just for the glass, I would still have to put it together. Thanks for the offer of information, I will certainly be using it! I'm looking forward to getting this tank. I was thinking of using concrete blocks on the stand, the floor in the room I am putting it in is not level. Will I be better off making it out of wood? camtang
Search smideys tank build it shows how he made his stand. I think there is a few threads about about making stands different ways.
Totara
Hi all, Got a chance to look at the tank on Tuesday. Its monsterous! Has a built in sump! Stupid me never measured it properly.... I will be getting it sometime soon, not entirely sure when. Its too big for my trailer so the guy who has it will have to bring it in on his one. On the plus side, while I was there he gave me all the other old aquarium stuff he had. This included a 2 tanks, 1 airpump, 1 55W heater, 1 filter, and a hood and light for one of the tanks. One of the tanks was screwed, cracked bottom panel, most of the other panels were chipped or beaten up looking so I tossed it away. The tank that is in good condition is too large for the spot for my hospital tank, so I am setting it up as another freshwater, probably planted tank. It is 71 liters. If anyone has some ideas as to what to do with it, please share them! I am going to paint the back black as soon as this rain stops (Come on Nelson!)
