SanityChelle
I've been a bit talkative lately, so I figured I'd upload a pic of my little starter tank. I would love to get a bigger tank, but in an apartment with wooden floors I figured it wasn't such a good idea. Pretty happy with these little guys though. The tank is an Ecostyle 47 from the lovely guys at HFF in Mt Roskill, which seems just perfect for a beginner like me. Not too sure what I'm doing with the plants just yet, kinda just seeing what works and what doesn't. I do a half teaspoon dose of Excel every couple of days which the ambulia seems to be eating up, and the lights are on for about four or five hours after I get home. The occupants are everyone you can see. One little hillstream loach with obligatory vacuum related name (Dyson), and five WCMM known as the Scooby gang after the boyfriend named the biggest female Buffy. Not the best photo of the minnows, but I've only got my phone to work with and they're rather quick. It's probably not the most mindblowing of tanks, but I've certainly caught the bug. TmanNZ
Nice Tank, Love the look of it, thinking of setting up a little 22L or 30L aquarium along these lines, just need to make a diy air filter for it .
SanityChelle
That would be cool to see. I'm hoping to plant it up a little more and swap out the little house for a cool rock or driftwood something.
reptilez
Looks very nice for a first tank! You will catch the bug and get multiple tanks shortly :nilly:
SanityChelle
I already have! But because there's no room in my tiny place, I'm dropping hints to the bf for him to get a decent tank. He's a bit taken with the plecos and 'sucker fish', though is leaning towards a little turtle. Might be able to squeeze in a little betta tank beside this one (post-Christmas present, yes?).
calculator
Yea, there is nothing wrong with more tanks, MTS is infectious and there is no cure. Just note there is no thing as a small turtle, they all grow relatively large so be a good pet keeper and don't get one unless you have a long term plan for it. Not that I am trying to discourage you not to do it, they are cool animals and I love my two. Great looking tank though, definitely would look better with more WCMM in it. SanityChelle
Oh! The list of pets I had growing up contained big dogs so any pet turtle is on the little side to me. Plus, I rather learnt my lesson of being unprepared when the local petshop advised me a 2.5gallon unfiltered bowl was perfect for three goldfish Thankfully, they're all in big new homes, and I'm all about the research now. Yeah, I'll probably get another five from HFF sometime in the next few weeks. Do you have pictures of your tanks around in here?
camtang
I like how sharp the black makes the green plants! It gives good depth.
SanityChelle
It's closer to navy blue in real life but my phone does funny things in the light, which I actually like better than the straight black. After seeing Morcs' plant pack, I've bought one myself so hopefully I'll be getting even more colour in there soon.
calculator
Do you have pictures of your tanks around in here? I don't have any recent pictures, but here is one when it only had ~15 minnows in it. (I think I may have squished one with a rock while scaping at this point, whoops) it is very different from yours though.
SanityChelle
It's nice to get to see how a mix of the minnows looks. I really like the rocks! How easy is it to clean with the larger rocks on the bottom?
calculator
Its been set up for about half a year, and I have never cleaned them. I think the hillstream loaches and high flow in the tank keep them clean.
SanityChelle
How many hillstreams do you have in how many litres? Not cleaning it at all seems pretty impressive. I seem to get dust-like particles everywhere, they coat my ambulia like crazy.
SanityChelle
Just received my plant pack from waterplantz. HEAPS of cool plants in there, so happy I bought it. The tank is looking a bit like a jungle while I'm testing out what lives and what doesn't. My hillstream loach is perched on the top of the castle trying to figure things out. There's a few plants I couldn't identify since they were grown emersed and some would just have grown too big so out they went. Some of the plants were: Moneywort Saururus cernuus (Don't think I'll keep this in the tank, might try out in a vase or something) Myriophyllum variifolium Hygrophila angustifolia and a few tips of Alternanthera rosaefolia that I really hope converts to submerged because I love the colour it gets. SanityChelle
Update on the tank. I've added five longfins which are quite lovely. The planting is a big chaotic, but we'll see how it goes.
