Mollymate
I am looking at getting a couple of bettas, was wondering if they tolerate salt in their water. I have been breeding mollies so have salt in my tanks. Would like to use some of that water as it is already cycled. I use Marine salt for the Mollies. Appreciate any help. BikBok
I've had a Betta in a moderate dosed tank short term but mollies can have much higher concentration can't they? If you can use some of the filter media in the new tank that would work better than the water.
Mollymate
Thanks for that. Yes mollies can have a lot, but wondered if I did water change and diluted it down quite abit, eventually it would be gone, just that the tank is already cycled so wouldn't have to start again. Godly3vil
Adding just water from your old aquarium won't do much for cycling, as most the beneficial bacteria lives in the filter and on glass/decor. Best thing to do is as BikBok said and add some of your established filter media to your new tank.
BikBok
are you wanting to put them in an existing salted tank or start a new one? If they are to go into an existing tank I would do several water changes before then to reduce the salt , as they can tolerate some and like you said it would eventually be diluted out anyway. If you're starting a new tank don't worry about using the water just go straight for established filter media .. or put in some extra sponge/noodles (whatever you use) for a few weeks that you can transfer to the new tank setup. Mollymate
Using an existing tank, had guppies in it so salt wasn't too strong, have change 1/2 water so far. Left 6 guppies in to keep tank going for now, until I get the newby. Ta for replies
