Ethan.L
Hi all. I recently obtained a new tank after a fish keeping hiatus. It's a 140L (122cm l, 31cm w, 39cm h). I realise that this tank is not suitable of most cichlids, especially Africans due to the small size and small foot print. I don't think I can be too bothered with a heavily planted tank, so I was wondering if I could still get away with some more rock loving cichlids. At the moment I have my eyes on Brichardis. From what I have read they don't get too big and have quite often been successfully kept in tanks smaller than mine. For those with experience with them, could you recommend roughly how many would be suitable? I am a bit worried about their breeding habits, don't know if I would be able to sell/trade away all the potential offspring. One last thing, I know that they are generally said to be very aggressive to other fish and it is wise to keep them in a species on tank, but is there any chance I would be able to keep a form a Pleco or two? Thanks for any help.
camtang
Julis or shellies could/should work. Brichardis are cool little fish, keep more females to males and all should be ok. Good luck giving away fry once they start breeding, they are great for feeders...
smidey
if you go julies &/or shellies i don't see why you couldn't have a colony of e yellows as well to use the upper level of the tank.
David R
Hi all. I recently obtained a new tank after a fish keeping hiatus. It's a 140L (122cm l, 31cm w, 39cm h). TBH I think that tank is far better suited to african cichlids than most of the american ones we get! I'd go for a single-species colony of one of the smaller species, perhaps brichardi as you suggested, or yellows, or demasoni. I really like the look of a good sized group of a single species, but if you want to mix it up you could probably do something like Smidey suggested. Ethan.L
Ok thanks guys. Don't think I'll go with the shellies, but could be interested in the yellows or dems. Roughly how many do you think would be suitable?
smidey
Ok thanks guys. Don't think I'll go with the shellies, but could be interested in the yellows or dems. Roughly how many do you think would be suitable? go for both yellows and dems. I'd go with 12 dems and 6 to 8 yellows, think that should be good but as time goes on you can add or remove to suit. what filtration you got? Ethan.L
Thanks Smidey, that is more that I expected but that is good. Currently got a Jebo 819. If that's not up to standard then could possibly sell it to buy something better.
smidey
i have had great success "overstocking" africans but i wouldn't do that without at least around 700lph for that tank. Thanks Smidey, that is more that I expected but that is good. Currently got a Jebo 819. If that's not up to standard then could possibly sell it to buy something better. personally i would keep more in there but if you start with that then you can add or remove as you feel confident.
