Benny
Hey everyone. I have some algae in my tank that is black in colour, and I currently dont have an algae eater. Can someone recommend an algae eater to tackle black algae?
Caryl
I don't think you will find any fish willing to eat black algae.

Caryl
Don't give up - someone may disagree with me!
Derek
OK Caryl I'll disagree with you. Siamese algae eaters will eat black algae. Benny I see you are in Wellington so I would get down to Animates, they usually have them. The small ones they sell under the name "black line flying fox". Sometimes they also have them at a larger size, these they sell as a "Torpedo flying fox". There is a good article at http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/ which describes this fish and the ways to tell it apart from other similar species. Don't feed too much food or they will eat that in preference to the algae.
Goldie
Derek is soooo right. I had the black algae problem a few months ago and had even tried stripped the tank down and re starting. Thanks to advice from this forum I finally got a siamese flying fox (from Pet world in Ferry road) siamese algae eater. He is doing a marvellous job. His mate committed sucide upon seeing the problem, bying flying out of the tank in the middle of the night through a small gap in the lid. Be careful though for the siamese algae eater is very similar in looks to a chinese one. Thanks to him and constant tank maintenance my tank is now looking pretty good and the plants are growing well again.
john1
Hi there I also have black algae. But only on my powerfilter (2) motor housing and associated parts. I don't worry about it. Remove it now and again with my fingers and whatever comes off, goes straight into the filtation system and it is gone. Simple. John
