BK
Some where on here some one commented that cat pills work on fish. How would I use this. What amount per ltr. All fish or only ones showing signs.
KM
Hi BK I was advised someone to deworm my discus. A bit risky with hundreds of $ worth of fish, but I decided to give it a try on 4 of my discus that have been a bit suspect. I was recommended to use one drontal (for cats) tablet to one entire batch of bought discus tucka. That works out to about one quarter tablet to every 8/9 discus tucka blocks. Well, the long and short is that the fish are still alive, and I have tried it on my larger more expensive discus too. I'm not too sure if it has had any positive affect though to be quite honest, although it hasn't had a negative affect either Would appreaciate some feedback myself from others on their opinions/sucess or failure, and their dosage suggestions. BK
Looking to use it on my Angles. Some don't seem to be putting any weigth size on, while one has all most doubled in size. Have seen stringy white stuff coming out of vent when I treated tank with curex. Didn't seem to sort problem out. Will try your option. KM
Let me know how you go. Stringy white opaque poos could also be hexamita (hole in the head), so if the deworm doesn't work, you will have to try flagyl, (also known as metronadizole) which you will need to get from a vet. suphew
I have used dog tablets before a few times. I use about 1/4 tab ground up and mixed with 1 or 2 cube discus tucker. Dosing is pretty random anyway because there is no way making each fish only eat their share of the treated food, some times one fish will just be lucky and get the big mouthful while another might be on the other side of the tank when the food goes in and get very little. Its important that you treat the whole tank any fish that don't show sign might be carriers. This is a common problem with angels and is a reason some people recommend not keeping them with discus. BK
Discus not in with Angles. Discus will go in second com tank with Tetras, Croy's, Gromi's and Ram when i can find nice one. Currently Discus in bear bottom tank as only received these Wednesday. Will put 2 in com tank but this is a few months away. Other 2 strains well hopefully pair. 9Discus total and 3 strains. Where are my African's going to go when I get around to it. Next time I build a house I'll have to design it around the tanks.
BK
Tried cat pill with beef heart. Only fish that was keen is the big Angle. will try smaller dose mix. If I take my Cardinail/Neon Tetras out of this tank well they be ok to put with Discus. I'm sure that you'll say no but if I can't get this problem solved I'll be left with a tank of live food for the Angles that are growing. All the fish in the tank look great apart from 1 silver Angle and 2 Black Angles (8 Angles, 2 Gromi's, 1 Pleco, 1Red Tail, 2 Kuli, 5 Guppies, and 12 Tetras). suphew
Tetras are fine with Discus, but not if your worried about them being sick already (or they have sick tank mates cause they could be carriers).
BK
Is there anything I can treat the hole tank with, as mixing with food is a bit random.
suphew
if you treat the worming pills 2 or 3 times you should get the whole lot. Since you are moving them how about putting them in a temperary tank then treating them to increase your chances. Remember that unless you are using completely different nets, buckets etc etc there is a chance that you have transferred them between tanks anyway. BK
This is just the biggest pain. They all came from the same shop and I've had problem with other fish from there as well. They are meant to be the oldest and best shop in CHCH but the staff really let them down. If they had there shit together they would own this market. The bestest concern I have is some of these fish cycled my new Discus tank. Oh F***.
suphew
I wouldn't panic, as long as your water quality is good you shouldnt have to many problems and most things can be treated if they crop up. Have you tested the water in CHC? I think it is bore water, in which case it might be quite hard which isn't so good for discus, I use a rain water collection tank even tho wlg water is basically rain water anyway. You should be be testing your PH which would be high if your water is hard. Your local council should be able to give you average water parameters. You need to look for the KH (should be low)and PH (which you know about).
