lmsmith
What would be better for a 50L heavily stocked planted tank? A Eheim Pick up 2010 or an Eheim Aquaball 2210?
Sophia
never had an Aquaball, but I had a pickup 2010 on my 54L and it was good. I now have a 2006 on my smaller tanks and like them well enough. My only complaint is that the top needs a bit of help to come off so I sanded the little lip to make it easier. Some have plugged up the holes with sponge too as fry can get sucked into it's sucky motor. I plugged the holes and later removed the bungs to improve water flow and I didn't lose any fry. lmsmith
Great info, thanks. I've actually had one of each in the past but I forget about their performance!
Sophia
my 2006s need the sponges squeezing out every month or 2 as the water flow gets less and less. Am not sure if that is because I have lots of little fish making lots of little poops or what
lmsmith
Haha could be it! I'm just going to have a couple of dwarf puffers, so I'm not too worried
Joe
Don't bother with internal filters. They are such a pain to clean and they don't have decent filtration capacity. Also they look hideous  I will never ever be going back to them. Canisters all the way  Eheim make a Classic 150 2211 nano canister which will be suitable for your tank size. It has 1L of media capacity. It is not available in NZ. This site used to sell it but it seems to have dissapeared... Aquaristikshop.com have a Hydor Prime 10 external filter which will cost $127.00 NZD incl. shipping It is rated at 300lph and has 1.5L of capacity so it is even better than the Eheim 2211 which has just 1L of capacity and the same flow. When the Eheim filter was on that website I compared the prices and they were the same.
lmsmith
Thanks, ive got a few (12) eheim externals, but it's not an option at this stage for the tank, although I'm hoping I can convince someone to change their mind. I'd rather get an internal until I can convince him otherwise. It's crazy, but he'd rather I spent the money than used an external!
Squirt
Just a few are they all in use? Just do it. When I re set up my nano planted (maybe sometime in the near future) I am going to be using an external.
lmsmith
At this point I'm pushing my luck getting the puffers at all, so I'll play good gf for a few months then change They're all on a very lightly stocked single 3ft tank to keep the filter media going. It's absurd, but man than tank is clean!
Squirt
The filter media will "starve" without enough ammonia?
lmsmith
The filter media will "starve" without enough ammonia? It doesn't need much, and colonies can multiply in <24hrs.
