Jellymeat
Last week end i just upgraded my 6 young discus's tank to 140L. And i have noticed that they are breathing rather heavily. I have tested my nitrate, nitrite and ammonia levels and they are all fine. But my ph is around 7.2. The temperature is around 27 dregrees. I have two bits of drift wood and a couple of stones. They swim around fine but they will hide in there cave. They are eating fine. I have up'd the water flow buy putting an eheim internal filter in, to try and increase the air in the water. When they are breathing both gills are moving the same amount so it is not gill fluke. There poo does not seem white but seems stringy What should i do? And what is the best ph for discus? I have been told that the ph should be closer to 7 on the acidic side as they are locally breed
LYNDYLOO
140 Ltrs is far to small for 6 Discus, you need to allow about 50 Ltrs per fish, so they should be in a tank of around about 300 Ltrs. I wouldn't worry about the PH, it's not out that far to bother mucking around with it. How often are you doing water changes?? What substrate do you have?? How long has the tank been set up?? What other fish do you have in the tank with the Discus?? What are you feeding them??
Jellymeat
These guys are around 4-5cm big. I just have fine grit. This tank has only been up for a week but i transferred all the water from their old tank into the new one including their filter. I just have gouramis and BN and corys I feed them on frozen blood worms, freeze blood worms, frozen brine shrimp, thera +A, freeze dried tubifex and discus tucker and they do eat my corys shrimp pellets. In probably about a month they will be moving into a bigger tank
LYNDYLOO
How big was the tank that they came out of? How often do you do water changes?? I would certainly up the air content of the Tank, you could also up the temp a few degrees, Discus like it quite warm. Need to do regular water changes when Discus are young otherwise you will end up with stunted fish. When mine where young I used to do water changes everyday. Jellymeat
i think they came out of a 80ltr tank. I do them twice a week. But i will start to do more now. I have up'd the air in the tank by putting a eheim 2010 which has air going through it
LYNDYLOO
Awesome, need lots of water changes when Discus are young, they release a hormone which can effect the growth of the other Discus in the tank, it's abit of I want to be the Biggest Discus in the Tank. Keep an eye on the heavy breathing, sometimes just adding an extra air stone can help. Good Luck Lynda

Lynda Yeah i saw that in my other discus but the funny thing is that the bossiest one is the biggest but has almost no colour but my the 2 smaller ones are almost fully coloured. Thanks for the help
LYNDYLOO
That's probably more to do with his colouration. Discus are stunning fish when they grow out nicely, hence the need for good water, and good quality food, nothing worse than a stunted Discus. FraserNZ
140L should be fine for discus that size, however, 27c kinda on the low side for discus I always run my tanks at 29-30c
