smidey
after a comment elsewhere i netted and measured one of my shellies, three of my 6 are a similar size, slightly smaller or larger but this one measures at around 7cm. The info on the cichlid forum states they get to 2" (5cm+-) so I am curious to find out how many others have some at that size. I do admit that mine are fat critters that resemble a groper more than a shellie but never mind, they are what they are :sml2: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1753
MarkLB
It may depend on where the fish is measured. Standard length (SL)measurement is taken from the tip of the snout to the caudal peduncle, excluding the tail. Total length (TL)includes the tail. smidey
from the cichlid-forum link, below all the species info. Maximum Size: This is in regards to total length (including the tail) of typical aquarium specimens. Wild specimens may not attain this size, or may in fact grow larger than aquarium raised individuals due to various factors. Also consider that this is the typical maximum size and there are exceptional individuals that will exceed it.

Mcculloch
I've noticed massive variation in the sizes of my females and one of my smallest has the largest batches of fry :dunno:
smidey
Me thinks you have one of these 8) maybe but half of mine are this size, the others are most likely female. Is it just that i feed alot? I would like to know if other in NZ have them this size or are mine freaks.
Jennifer
Crikey, that's one THICK fish! :sml2: All of mine were similar size to each other, males were larger, approx 6cm TL and females were about a third shorter. Even after several hundred fry, none looked quite like that though.
smidey
they are on a strong feeding regime
ryanjury
The father of that fish is probably only 5cm TL but he is an original import and they never grow as big as NZ bred fish with a good upbringing and that haven't been through all the stress associated with importation etc. I agree though that is a massive and very thick fish! Much like the FF I got off you they are twice the size of their parents that I saw last night..
