Batch Testing?

So I was bored and decided to learn how to import fish into nz (not that I could ever dream of having that kind of money) and I found batch testing.

Then I learnt that in Australia, batch testing is when they kill a bunch of certain species and test them for viruses. I assumed that this is the same process for nz.

Then my mind got wandering

Since bettas on the batch testing list, if I wanted to buy one betta from overseas would they make me buy more so they could test them?

Or what if I buy a whole bunch of bettas with different tail types, would I get to choose the ones they kill or is it just luck. For example if I bought high quality HM, PK and some run of the mill VTs all from the same breeder and they left me with only the VTs... It would defeat the purpose of importing them, since they left me with the fish I didn't really want.

Is this how it works in NZ or has my mind completely misunderstood the process of batch testing?

I am not up with how it is at present because it seems to change all the time depending who the person inspecting is and what part of the country you are in. When I imported goldfish years ago there were nine varieties (all goldfish) and they were treated as if they were a different species. This may be because a lot of Asian countries (such as Singapore) are realy trans shipping agents and the various fish types may have come from seperate breeders and even countries. They took one of each variety to test to see that they were goldfish and not carp with the barbels cut off and later they took one of each type to test for diseases. They came back and told me that the healthiest type had piscene TB even though they had spawned, and another type I asked them to take away because the had piscene TB according to them were healthy even though they were on deaths door. I understand that the severity of the testing regime relates to the type of fish and any signs of disease or deaths which have been observed. Good luck with importing.
