Squirt
Hello Yesterday I set up my new tank. I had rinsed the filter before I put it in. I added tank water from my main tank and filled it up about half way. The rest I filled it with dechlorinated (using API Stress Coat), so it was about a 50:50 ratio of tank to tap water. I then opened up my filter on the main tank (cycled) and removed a filter floss and some noodles. I transported them in some tank water. I removed the carbon from the filter (it's a delta 20 classic) and the noodles already in there. I then added my "cycled" noodles into the two trays where the carbon and the noodles that came with the filter were. I added some sand from my main tank to assist in building a Bacteria colony. Today I was looking at it and smelt something, I asked my dad and he also said it smelled, like chlorine. So I took out 10L (half) of the water and replaced it with water from my main tank, and added some more dechlorinator. My questions: 1. Adding this media will help shorten the time to cycle a tank. Right? 2. What is this smell? I know it's a bit ridiculous to be asking but is it the dechlorinator? 3. If there was chlorine in the water, does this mean I will have to replace the media in there with new cycled media? I know it's all confusing but if there's any grey spots please ask. I am trying to cycle the tank properly but quickly. There is no livestock in the tank. Thank you Matt
blueether
Dont know what the smell is/was but by the sounds of it you more or less have a tank with live bacteria and have done a 50% water change - this would not normally kill too many of the bacteria. Remember that the new bacteria colony will need food to survive and expand, this is either fish waste of you could feed with fish food (make a paste of flake food?) Squirt
Hi Thanks for the reply, I guess I forgot to add I did add about 10 turtle pellets, which should feed the bacteria there was also some flakes in there because I was feeding the fish at the same time. Thanks Matt
Squirt
:bounce: I tested the water for chlorine today using a pool test strip and it was under .5ppm. I did cut some black silicone off it to get the lid of it. Could this be the smell? Or could it just be the filter as its new? Matt
