undergroundfish
I have brought 4 festivum's which I plan on attempting to breed in the future but keeping them alive in the mean time will do. I chose these fish because they seem like a challenge and are not that that common. My main worry is WATER they require a PH of 5.5 - 7.2 (opinions vary) and soft water. Where I live the water out of my tap is more like 8 - 9 and the water is hard my duboisi love it. Can they adapt to my water conditions? and if so how? I have a 200L tank for the festivum's with a 300watt heater. I'm going to use an internal filter for now. I think a semi planted tank is the best option so I have laid some peat (which I hope will help with the ph a little) underneath a mixture gravel and large grain sand substate. I will buy some plants and a sunlight bulb in the next day or two.
David R
Get that KH test kit mentioned in the last thread and test that. You may be able to use driftwood and/or peat (or oak leaves, or alder cones) to soften the water, but if the KH is high you may be fighting a losing battle. My tap water pH is more like 8-9 but drops quickly because of the low KH. If the KH is high you could try collecting rainwater and mixing that with your tap water to help soften it.
