Dwarf puffers

Recommended Posts

I am not sure, I feed my puffers ramshorn snails, they love them. Funny thing that I noticed is that if I put small ones in with bigger ones, they prefer the bigger ones to the small ones. They climb almost completely inside the shell once they killed the snails to try and get every bite out, so the big snails die first and they manage to empty them out so much that the shell floats to the top, where as with the smaller ramshorn snails they can't get everything out and I need to either squish them or remove them from the tank. Stay away from any unicornhorn like snails, they hurt their little teeth, not good for puffers. I should add that a big ramshorn is about the size of a 20c coin so that is still small but big for them cause they are so small. I will also add that I bought 30 ramshorns off someone on trademe and chucked them in my main tank where they are breeding and supplying food for my puffers, they are cute looking so it does not bother me to have them in my tank

I just went to the dwarf puffers forum and did a search for apple snails. It came up that big ones are not good food and can even withstand the occasional nip from the puffers, but the little ones are great for them, so its actually a good snail to breed right in the tank with them. I can't do that with my ramshorn because even my biggest one is still small enough to be a snack

Bloodworms are my puffer's staple diet, the snails are a treat. I buy frozen bloodworms, then I take a small plate and poor a little garlic guard in it, I use my tweezers to move the frozen bloodworms around in the garlic until the worms start coming loose from the frozen block and then I feed them to my puffers by wiggling them infront of them. They love it and usually fill their tummies super big full of them. Puffers are known to get intestinal problems so the garlic guard helps out with preventing that as well. The left over bloodworms, not usually a lot goes to my main tank and helps fight intestinal probs that side too. I really suggest you try and feed bloodworms as well, as its mostly their staple food
