dom
Hi, I've got one of these filters in my tank and twice now the pump has stopped working. In the past it totally stopped and nearly killed my fish so the LFS replaced the pump bit for me as it was only about 4-5 months old. But yesterday it seemed to have stopped too so I took it out and put it in again and it mysteriously worked. Are these notorious for it ? Is there anything more reliable ? I have a 60 litre tank. I'm a bit concerned as we're going away for 4 weeks holiday in July and whilst i can probably get someone to keep an eye on the fish every 3 days if the pump goes they would not really sort that one out I think ! cheers
hovmoller
I had one where the impeller seemed to have melted the plastic around it until it finally jammed.. is that what happened to yours?
ichthus
Apparently they weren't converted very well for the NZ electrical system - so there are a few problems with the pumps having a melt down.
dom
Hi, Yes the plastic had melted around the top of the first one and it used to make a horrendous buzzing noise. Again tonight when I have just come in from work I can see minimal/next-to-no-flow on the surface. I've had it with these pumps - can you recommend something more reliable ? Also this pump has a bit of a design flaw as fish get stuck behind it as it is an internal one with suction cups. i live in Welly and would really appreciate any advice on a new pump for a 60 litre and where to buy from. My nearest place is Porirua so I could look there. I am tempted to ask for a refund as its not been a year and it will be the second replacement. My main issue is I am going away for 4 weeks too so I need a reliable pump. Also if I get a new pump is it likely to affect the chemistry of the tank as I won't have my old filter with all my nice bacteria pumping around ? cheers. suphew
They had a bad batch when they first made them, the resin round the coil wasn't put in at the correct temperature and resulted in air bubbles. When the motor gets dirty and warms up the bubbles expand and either jam the impeller or bubble round the end of the motor. The newer motors are fine now, if your's is playing up just take it to your LFS and get a new one.
ryanjury
I would definitely take it back and ask for a new unit, also ask for assurance that they have fixed the issue (like Suphew has suggested they have) while you are there pick up an airpump and a sponge filter and chuck that in your tank just for back up until you have proven the new filter is reliable.. dom
Thanks for the tips guys, I'll take it to the LFS to see what can be done. cheers
suphew
There is a date stamp on the pumps. Unfortunately it's been a while and I can't remember the dates for the good and bad pumps but they are made in batches so as long as it's a different batch to the failing one it should be fine
