BigBossPants
Im getting an Aquastart 500 tank tonight from a friend, it presently has green gravel and plastic plants so once I get it home its getting a makeover! Ill be starting from scratch so would love opinions on substrate, decor and stocking. My budget however is next to nothing so will have to make do with what I can find or make. I have at the moment lying around: aquabasis, black silica, coffee grit gravel, glacier pebbles and daltons washed sand. Filtration will be a cf500
GZ_Loach
Get a blue light, best cheap thing you can do to make a tank of that size look cool
BigBossPants
Im undecided as to whether I want to plant it or not, can plants grow under blue light? The lights that come with it are 2x PL11w with 'tropical/sunlight'. Would one of these provide enough for decent plant growth (on one side of the tank at least)? GZ_Loach
Apparently blue can be good for plants, but i was only suggesting because It sounded like you weren't going to plant it. Tropical/sunlight is what most people use to grow plants so you should be fine, You should replace the tubes every year tho.
Squirt
Yes I've heard that blue lights can encourage plants to perform photosynthesis. Because of the wavelength of 405nm I think it encOurages them. Same goes with red lights
BigBossPants
Aah very good, I might get a white/blue and a white/red then I already have 3 planted nanos so was thinking either scrap them and plant just this one, or do something different all together. I like the idea of a single species tank
