Eheim 2071 issues.

Afternoon all,

I have been fighting with my filter for a good two months now...

A couple of months ago I noticed that the floor under the cabinet was all wet... filter was leaking... so I moved the cabinet, got floor dried out and purchased one of those square storage cubes that the filter now sits in so if it leaked again it wouldn't go all over the floor.

Well, I have done everything I can think of in terms of working out why the silly thing is leaking, but nothing seems to work and it is still leaking!

So far I have replaced the pre filter foam and fine wool media in the filter, completely cleaned out the canister (not the media), checked all the o-rings, cleaned the impellor and shaft area, checked the canister for cracks... everything seems fine and it is still leaking.

It is leaking very slowly out of the top of the filter, normally out of the area where the power cord enters the unit...

and when I turn it off and tip it back the water pours out of the back of the motor bit.

I'm really frustrated by this because I have to turn off the whole filter weekly so I can empty the container it is sitting in, and because I can't seem to fix it! :an!gry

Anyone encountered something like this before and have any advice? Or should I just go to the LFS and buy all new O-rings and hope that works :)

Cheers in advance!

Have you tried to take the top plastic cover off the motor head? Just unscrew all visible screws (if not under warranty)

If you say the water comes out from where the chord enters then it might be in there somewhere the leak is.

Firstly I would look into the warranty type stuff as suggested, you pay a small fortune for these filters so should be covered for a bit longer..

I would also do the suggestion of lubing the seals with silcone grease that might help, but failing that if it is coming out the top of the motor unit take it all apart and see if there are any other seals that may have been moved or need a lube and stick it all back together.

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies.

I went into the LFS, and I have found out that this problem isn't fixable.

Apparently this particular model of Eheim had some sort of random flaw with it when it was first released, which allowed a lot of water to build up in the motor head itself, which would then in turn leak. Eheim have sorted this out with the filters being manufactured now days.

Unfortunatly the only way to fix this issue is to replace the motor head unit.

It is covered under warrenty, except I would have to go back to the shop I bought it from, which happens to be in the South of Germany where I was when I bought it... soooo, I'm going to have to fork out for a new motor head unit because it will be easier and cheaper than getting in touch with the fish shop in Germany :tears:

Ah well, looking on the bright side... I will have a whole set of spare parts for the new unit :slfg:

Cheers all.
