As far as the iron ions part is concerned...it will end up as the oxide if it does not get bound very very strongly to some organics or if it is not taken up by organisms. The oxide is "rust" but there are many forms of "rust". Iron has an extremely low solubility in seawater and causes it to form the oxide.
