Stephanie
Basically our fighters have fraying fins and aren't looking great. It started with one and quickly spread and i'm more than gutted, as yesterday I lost my dragon in my avatar. We've been treating them with melafix, then primafix, the pet shop is ordering in furan as they don't have it in stock. No one is looking good and i'm at the point where I want to give it all up and sell all my fish and tanks. I've never been so gutted in my life. Has anyone had any experience with anything similar? Did you treat it?
Stephanie
The tanks are cleaned often and water is fine. Hence i'm going crazy as I can't think of any reason they'd be sick.
Adrienne
Hi Stephanie - sorry to hear. Certainly sounds like fin rot. Depending on the colour of the fins and tail you may be able to see little pink or red streaks just above the frayed off area. This line will be where the next bit of tail or fin drops off to. Usually caused by stress or water conditions. Shifting plus a different water type, even if parameters are fine, may well have a lot to do with it. Unfortunately it can be very fast moving. While you are waiting for furan do daily water changes and you can use rock salt from the supermarket to try and slow or stop it. I used 1 gram per litre of water. It does work but I have had a lot more success with furan as it is bacterial. The fish need to be isolated however if they are all contained within the same tank you will be better to treat the tank. Good luck
Stephanie
We've swapped them into a different tank, they were all together unfortunately so we're treating that and i'm about to start scrubbing out the old tank to get rid of any nasties in there. We're using salt as well. The poor little guys aren't looking great at all. Thanks for the advice. I'm crossing my fingers and i've been checking on them constantly. I think this will be the end of fighter keeping for me.
SamH
That sucks Steph! I'm down to two fighters myself, one isn't look great and the other has whitespot. I have no idea what happened as I had seven perfectly healthy fish just a month ago. But don't give up, we all have moments like this. I just step back and focus on something else for a while. Best of luck.
Adrienne
I don't know if this will be a lot of help but I do find that this time of the year seems to be hard on fighters. I don't know if its to do with the change of atmospheric conditions, cooler temperatures at night or whatever but if I am going to lose fighters it normally around now. People may think I am imagining it but I know I am not. Its been the same for several years.
Stephanie
I wish it was easier. We have a whole bunch of sword fry that got sick a week ago. We've lost a few but most of them are cured. Fighters just seem to be so much more precious when they get sick. We're down to 5 males and 4 females all of a sudden.
Adrienne
I lost over 50 fully developed male fighters about 12 months into breeding. Something went through the tank that wiped out the lot within 24 hours. Its never happened since.
Stephanie
They still don't look great this morning but they're eating.
Stephanie
Lost my spadetail this morning. He was the one who originally had whatever it is. Down to 4 males and my last crowntail doesn't look like he's going to make it. &c:ry
ryanjury
Sorry to hear about your losses, have you tried salt and furan2? I am not a fan of those melafix type remedies it has been proven they can help with some things but they are not very broad spectrum so not really a good thing to add unless you know what you are targeting, at least they make the fishroom smell nice though
Stephanie
Waiting on Furan, they don't stock it here. Ordered it a couple of days ago. It's so disappointing. You spend all this time and money and then one little thing goes wrong and bam! I'm so attached to every single one, which makes it hurt even more. I was reading your thread the other day, sorry to hear about yours too! Everyone seems to be having a rough time in the fishkeeping world at the moment!
