Kinbote
One of my bleeding hearts in a quarantine tank with some others and some rosy tetras seems to have had its tail bitten off, and now there's an infection (white discolouration, white fuzz) around the area. Should I euthanise, or could some kind of medication help?
Fishkeepa
Sadly without its tail (I take it the whole tail is missing) I dont feel that there is much that can be done for it :dunno: , Even if the infection with is cured with a fungicide treatment (the white fluff is fungus) it will never be able to swim properly again. Ultimately it is up to you though Best way to avoid further deaths is to find whatever is biting the tails off and isolate that
ryanjury
You can treat the infection and the fish can still live a healthy and happy life, I had a demasoni live for a number of years in a colony after she had her tail removed by a much bigger fish who was trying to eat her.. But if the fish is too far gone and suffering, not eating and in bad shape then it might be kinder to put it down.
Kinbote
I'm dosing them with API Furan-2, hopefully they'll pull through. I suspect it's the same infection that's been spread from the cardinal tetras I got at Bird Barn, maybe columnaris.
will.pointon
If you were to euthanize it, how would you prefer to do it??

Kinbote
Another rosy tetra's dead this morning, as is the injured bleeding heart, which is probably for the best. That makes three of my fish I've lost so far. I'd said in another thread (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=50615) that this all started when I got a batch of cardinal tetras selected by a visibly stoned employee from the Bird Barn Henderson, at least one of which was clearly in the advanced stages of disease on arrival. They'd previously said that they'd compensate me for the loss of any of my own fish from the same infection, but have since revoked that offer. Accidents happen, no doubt, and it's unfortunate for everyone, but it seems like there's some negligence involved here. The fish loss and medication have cost me about $60 so far. Will see how it progresses.
BikBok
this has really put me off buying from the BB. I know sick fish can end up in any stores.. but it's how they deal with it that worries me. The last few visits to the BB I have seen sick and dieing fish , and I've come away and not bought a thing. I wonder if they've changed their way of doing things or their suppliers.. they used to have really healthy looking fish. ... or maybe it's just a bad run and they need to get on top. Thanks for the reply, that's interesting to know. I'll write some more about my thoughts on BB after my current situation's cleared up.
