redracer77
I decided a while ago to setup a nano marine tank. I set this up on monday: Tank: Aqua One aqua start 340 40litre, 400L/hr overhead filter with purigen Light: PL 11W 8000k with reflector, Blue LEDs to be added next week. Pump: Eheim 300L/hr circulation pump heater: Aqua One 25Watt Substrate: Coral sand 2.5kg Coral rock 2.5kg Salinity: 1.021 (red sea) Temp: 24C Filled with tap water to cure the rock, I will get RO water for changes. I hope to grow a few soft corals in the future. Stocking plan so far is a Fire Shrimp and maybe a couple of royal grammas. Pictures taken with my phone so not the best quality. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
spoon
looks like you are off to a good start the lighting should be fine altough if you wanted you may be able to order in a 11w pl bulb at 14k as its going to take an awful lot of blue leds to offset the yellow colour of that 8K bulb (ignore this if you are using high power leds) another thing to be careful of is the shaft in the pump for your overhead filter it will more than likely be stainless steel which will eventually rust . there are small wave type circ pumps availible now http://www.fish-street.com/resun_mini_w ... gory_id=35 the small model (pictured in link) is 2000lph forget what you know about pumps such as your eheim the flow from the wave pumps is much slower and spread out so a pump this size would be perfect . the eheim would also work however it directs the flow into a very small area and would damage corals if they were placed directly in its flow salinity should be raised to 1.024 its hard to tell sometimes if you are using a hydrometer to measure it. see if you can borrow a refractometer from someone (or get one for around $60 shipped from ebay, get one with automatic temperature compensation as salinity changes with temp) also not to put you off but have you thought about how you will keep the tank cool if it goes over 28 it could be disaterous ( again ignore this if the room its in is airconditioned) remember heat from the pl bulb and ballast will also contribute , fan cooling the lights and tank may help combat this
redracer77
I have been told the 14000k PL tubes are not as bright as the 8000k, The leds I am going to use are about 150,000mcd and I think I have room for about 20, hopefully that will be plenty. I will keep an eye on the impellor shaft. I did also wonder about the eheim being to direct. I will look into a small wave pump. The temp is a concern but this is the hottest time of year so I will see how it goes over the next couple of weeks, But I am prepared to fit a fan if needed. The temp has only raised 1 degree during the day so far. I will raise the salinity this weekend and yes the hydrometer is quite hard to read. Thanks for the advice
redracer77
Would this wave pump be the correct one to get for my setup? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 831278.htm

redracer77
Update: I have changed the eheim circ pump for the resun wave pump, purchased a refractometer and made some mods to the light hood. I removed the ballast from the lid and fitted an additional PL11W light. It now looks like this

redracer77
Time for some updates Does anyone know the name of this coral? I bought it as mini purple xenia, is that correct? I also have a tomato clown in there but would stay still for a photo. Any feedback is appreciated.
