compresser type pump gone noisy suddenly

Have had one of these, probably been running for 4-5 years now, just tonight it was making a hell of a racket, could hear it thru the whole house.

Its a 40 or 50L/min one (from memory)

Any pointers on what may have gone wrong with it? I got it off trademe ages back so any record of who it came from is long gone,

Says COM-3540 on it on half a sticker that is left on it.

So anyway, need to sort it out, or replace it. Any issues with opening these up? I have never had any luck fitting new rubber bits to the crappy little pumps and having them last, but I am assuming that something larger like this would be easier.

It sounds like the diaphragms are perished.

These pumps can be easily taken apart. they have 2 flat circular diaphragms.

You can get cheap diaphragm rubber from Para rubber

+1 just go to para rubber and ask for the diaphragm rubber, cut out some new ones and install them. Or you can go to your local shop and try and get the proper diaphragms in, I have tried this and found it very difficult and also expensive when they do arrive.

The pumps are really easy to take apart, just go for the front 4 screws (not the middle ones) and then you will have to pry the front bit off and the inside bit, then you can see the 2 diaphragms and should easily be able to see they are worn out. Another thing to check is that all the screws on the pump are tight some of them work loose and this would cause a racket too but probably more of a rattle not what you are describing here.

+2

If it’s not obvious already, try not to run it like that because the diaphragm is designed to cause resistance and slow the moving parts down, without it or if it has a hole in it the metal pistons are banging away at the ends. They are made of 'muck metal' and can break which will be the end of your pump.

Its not running because it would wake the dead with the noise it was making. Am running all the old crap airpumps for now, anyone know a place that can send them out? Im not really able to make it out anywhere at the moment till I fix my car up.

It will cost you like $2 to get the rubber and cut one yourself and probably $20-30 for the proper diaphragm (if you can get one as I have had issues with this in the past) plus fitting it would cost you probably more than your pump is worth if you had to pay someone else to do it.
