ryanjury
It really depends what cichlids you plan to keep in it How big is the tank?
robocar
im looking at 400ltr tank have at the moment 2 electric blues 5 electric yellows 2 ice blues will be adding frontosa "when i can find a breeder" and some other afican cichlids too was going to go with sand and coral but now im thinking that looks too boaring and should save that for marine instead :bounce:
Bilbo
First thing is change continents to South America Sorry just had to. I have seen a number of african tanks with just light coloured sand and some nicely placed white rocks or coral that look really stunning. Its just about being creative and then matching it with some great looking active fish.
si_sphinx
I use black background and with the brighter yellows and blues over a white substrate, they seem to stand out a lot more. Plus some java fern and anubias on the coral rock, and when the algae sets in on the rocks also, they don't always look so white.
smidey
i had a black background with the likes of fryeri, yellows, red & blue zebras & it worked well with white oragonite substrate. not so good for the trophs now as they are black but you can't suit everything & i will change it at some point. firenzenz
I'm looking to change my up my African set-up too. Thinking Black background with Coral and limestone rock. Can't decide between white silica substrate or Black substrate/sand as I've seen a few show tanks like that and they are very striking. ryanjury
I reckon all black back ground and rocks and sand with some bright white and blue lighting.. IMO the fish stand out and colour up alot more over darker substrate. And get some yellows/dems if you want marine like colours with the blue bulbs they glow, I have had people mistake them for marine fish plenty of times in my fishroom Watch your ice blues in that setup males can get very agro and give the other fish a very hard time, and ultimately your tank would be too small for a colony of adult frontosa it might be ok for a male but he will most likely get big enough to eat your yellows and things like that of course that is probably 2-3yrs down the track from when you get them if you get them from a breeder. This guy here breeds and sell frontosa fry cheap in Auckland if you did decide to proceed with them. http://www.fishkeepers.co.nz/forums/vie ... =11&t=3005
