New tank mates

Well, I was thinking about getting a couple of Angels in the near future for my community tank.

I was visiting a friend, and she said I could have hers....YIPEEEEEE for me LOL.

I'm not too sure if the are males or females (how do you tell?)

One is larger, mainly black with silver markings, with a dab of gold near it's head...the other is mainly silver with a few black markings.

Both are very pretty fish

Will have to try my hand at taking pics again LOL.

I just googled "sexing angelfish" and got some rather interesting results :o .

determining sex "angel fish" was much better :D .

I Found this very interesting article on breeding Angelfish:

Excerpt taken from: http://forum.aquariumhobbyist.com/angel ... s/188.html

Sexing

Don't be in a hurry. The only way to sex Angelfish, is by observation of the mating tubes, of the fish. The females tube, is about 1/8 inch long, somewhat longer than the males. The males tube, is shorter and more blunt shaped. The tubes are visible, only shortly before and during spawning.

The tubes extend down from the vent area of each fish. White in color and as big around as a pencil lead in large Angelfish they can be easily seen during this time.

Many people believe that Angelfish mate for life.

I haven't found this to be accurate. With Angelfish, most mature male and female relationships develop when both fish are in the mood. I believe that the formal pairing, lasts only while the fish remain together. I have separated mated pairs and introduced a new mature male. He gladly steps in and takes over the duty, with full cooperation of the female. The first male is residing in the next tank, in full view of the female. This has always been my experience. Be aware that the cuddling up process, to the new mate will sometimes take a few weeks.

I hope this helps,

Cheers,

Matt

Phillz, if you go to the thread that Caryl had of her angels spawning in her tank.

You can see a perfect way of sexing your angels.

Look at the pic of her adult fish.

They are perfectly placed to see what I am about to tell you.

Side on, bang on for what I'm about.

Draw an imaginary line from the base of the gill plate to the base of the Caudal peduncal.

Note the difference of the angle where the ventral fins come from.

The female is almost a 45degree and the male (closest) is noticably flatter.

This system is almost infallible, all you have to do is have a group to compare one another with, or a little bit of experiance at the "angle" of the angel.

Thanks for your help Matt & Alan, much appreciated :)

dont breed them, you'll get horrible little mottled coloured angels like the parents, look for some pure colour ones, like straight silver or black.

I never said that I was wanting to breed them, only wanting to know how to sex them....and personally I don't think they are a horrible, mottled colour....I think they are quite pretty, but hey thats just my opinion! (I'm not a fish Expert!)

Well said Shae..

And i am not a fish expert either.

I think you made a good point here :)

Believe it or not Shae, those "horrible little mottled coloured angels" that you choose to call them, seem to have a better market than the standard silver and black you mention.

The results would possibly be 25/75.. depending on the original parents of the pair shown... and may or may not produce some decent looking fish :)

Bill.
