Nymox
both the female have something suspect, one much more then the other. I hopefully will get a camera to use tonight and get some pics up to help diagnose. Problem number one: She has round bump, sticks out a little 2//3 the way down her body towards the tail, its about 2 mil in diameter, slightly reddish. Her behavior is normal, though the male is chasing her more then usual so it could be a wound he caused. Its not fuzzy, nor does it have any growth on it, it looks more like its under the scales. Pic will help this one, but only 50/50% chance Ill get a camera to use tonight. I havnt found anything like it on the net but Im not too sure what im searching for exactly. Problem number two: This girl is a little fat, nothing like bloat or over feeding, she kinda looks like shes holding. Problem is shes hiding well away from the other fish, and is breathing heavily. Its not like these guys to be sitting around alot, well at least not in my experience. They're usually very active. I give this tank 2 x 10% water p/w and have given extra 5% yesterday and today. Tempreture is 26 and plenty of airation. Water conditions are fine tank is well established. Tank mates are bolivian ram pair, female fighter and whiptail, none of which even look twice at the rainbows and never have. I'll work on getting some pics up soon, I wanted to get about another 5 of these, they're really awesome fish so any advice will be greatly appriciated. Thanks Matt

ryanjury
Did you only just recently get these fish? A friend of mine locally brought one from the local animates only to have it die a few days later and then their current (healthy) other 2 neon dwarf rainbows die. They went into the store to find the entire tank in quarantine as well. Maybe it is a dud batch that has come through the importers?
Nymox
a few months ago, so perhaps thats what has happened here.
ryanjury
This batch happened a week or so ago so I don't think this is what has happened to your fish.. As for what is wrong with your fish I am unsure maybe Jen could help, initial guess on the lump could be anything from a parasite to a random lump to a bacterial infection.. Jennifer
I can't tell anything from the photos (other than that the fish looks unwell) but I would agree with Ryan's estimate. That said...and this is a bit of a stretch...in the second photo the light is shining through the fish and I can almost see what looks like a possible large loop of worm in the intestinal area. Might just be a figment of my imagination but it is cheap and easy to deworm with Aviverm if you want to go that route. As Ryan says, bumps can be caused by many things but those that come up suddenly could be skin infections, abscesses, muscle infections or some parasites. In the absence of diagnostic testing, my rule of thumb is to treat for whatever is likely to kill the fish the quickest. Since you can't really treat for viruses, treat for bacteria and hope that the antibiotic you use will be effective. Furan would be the easiest route but it may not be effective. SMZ TMP (sulfa trimeth) is a good option and is readily available.
Nymox
I can see that loop too, so the best option is to deworm with Aviverm and use Furan to treat for bacteria? And take it from there? I'll move some fish around and give these girls a tank on their own tomorrow, and look at hitting up the good ol grandmother for a loan to get the meds. Thanks for ya help will keep updating.
