Mel
are just his fins nipped? any bites on his body? If he is getting really harassed then i would get him out of the tank ASAP and into another tank, don't know if melafix will be any good, but i would just put a good dosing of rock salt in with him, keep a good eye on him and keep water very clean
Matto
i have removed him and is looking relaxed now and he has damage to his body so i will get some melafix soon thanks for your help
smidey
i had a giraffe male that lost all fins & became "bob" after a bashing. I put him in a tank by himself & he came right over a few weeks or a month. Add some meds & the chances are he will be fine although they generally don't get the tail fins back to what they were. ryanjury
Melafix is not a general cure all it is for bacterial infections and is only effective against certain types. If he isn't showing signs of infections I would add salt to promote slime production and aid healing and keep him in a nice clean tank lots of water changes good food etc and let him heal. You can drop meth blue or tonic directly onto the damaged fins and body parts etc to prevent any fungal infection setting in. Africans do get the bash quite often and most usually recover so he should be ok I like Smidey have had a "bob" recover fully.
Jennifer
I agree with the above treatment suggestions. To clarify, Melafix is an antiseptic which is a substance that has antimicrobial effect on skin surfaces either acting to kill the microbes or halt their reproduction and thus make it less likely that they will cause disease. Salt also acts as an antiseptic as does formalin, some aldehydes and dyes like malachite green & methylene blue. Antiseptics differ from antibiotics which enter the blood stream and travel around the body killing bacterial invaders. Antiseptics are all toxic to a certain extent and will cause some irritation to skin. The application of antiseptics, while somewhat beneficial, can also cause pain and toxicity which both can inhibit the immune response, and thus delay wound healing. This is the balancing act. Like in surgery, it is preferable to start with a clean surface rather than have to constantly be cleaning up with antiseptics. The tenants of wound healing: 1. Keep it clean = the cleanest water you can provide 2. Promote a good immune system by reducing stress and providing the very best nutrition 3. Promote good wound healing properties within the body by slightly increasing temperatures and frequency of feeding
