fadeless
I currently have my male betta in a small tank with the female in a jar in the middle. He is trying to blow a bubble nest but it isnt that flash or big and she will have nothing to do with him. What can i add to the tank to help with building a bigger nest?? I have read adding polystyrene works?? Should i add some floating plants also?? How long should it take to make a good nest?? TIA
Adrienne
Some fighters don't even build a nest until spawning starts. Adding plants or a piece of polystyrene gives a surface for the bubbles to adhere to. Plants also give the female somewhere to hide until she's ready to spawn. What sort of fighters are they? fadeless
Should i let the female out? I have some Java moss i can put in there for her but i have let her out and he just chases her and breaks all the bubbles he has blown. She has bred before (with the last owner), he hasnt. They are veiled tails.
Adrienne
How big is he compared to her. What does she look like i.e. do her sides have dark and light lines on them and if so are they horizontal or vertical. How long has she been in with him. What have you been feeding them. fadeless
She is smaller than him. When i went to pick her up she had the vertical lines on her the next day she went to dark blue which she has remained that colour since. Im feeding them decapsulated brine shrimp eggs which they both love (had it left over from my guppy fry) and betta flakes. I put a floating plant in and he is hiding under it and looks pretty happy. Adrienne
if she's been contained for a few days and is filling out - sort of marble looking from the front view I'd wait until tomorrow evening and let her out. He will chase her but as long as he's not inflicting serious damage leave her in there. If no spawning after a couple of days, take her out, seperate them totally and try again in another week. Some fighters are simply just not compatible. Good luck.

SamH
They are veiled tails. I hope you have someone who wants to buy them, VT's aren't in very high demand with breeders. Pet shops and people who want them as pets might take them though. Definitely add something for him to build his nest under. HTH and good luck. If they spawn then great if not i dont mind too much, i have a few friends who want one in their community tanks. Will wait and see what happens. There are some amazing bettas around but didnt really want to spend too much if nothing is going to happen. Im starting small.
Adrienne
You need to bear in mind that potentially you could end up with 300+ fry from one spawning. Once the males mature they need to be kept apart i.e. one container per male - how you go about doing this is up to you. However, I for one am absolutely desperate to get my hand on a decent veiltail female and to a lesser extent a male.
