xxdarnixx
how closely can you breed fish? i got two fighters off a hobby breeder and he couldnt remeber if they had the same fathers or not?? i dont really want to risk it but a shame as they are both beautifulll fish,i have lots of different pairs so can easily mix and match,i always keep records of who comes from who tho,if it happened that they did 'interbreed' do you get deformed fish? SamH
It's fine to do that, that's how today's strains were created. Breeding father-daughter or brother-sister is quite common, it's actually quite desirable. It does have it's downsides though. Say the father has an awesome tail spread but a weak body, breeding him with his daughter may produce fish with big tails, but also weak bodies. That's when you have to "cross" with another fish, preferably from another line and not some random fish. HTH

HTH really wow i thought people steered clear of closely related fish lol,i still think i wont pair these two,its 50/50 whether they where related or not but ive got others that will pair with these two
SamH
Isn't interbreeding when you breed random fish together? Correct me if I'm wrong. Perhaps try linebreeding if you have a goal (http://www.angelsplus.com/ArticleLinebreeding.htm)
N1CK
Its fine as long as you outcross to other every 4/5 generations, its how to cement their genetics (for need of a better word ). But its a bad idea if the parents have bad genetics And your title should be inbreeding and if you are trying to create a strain of colour/morph, Line breeding

SamH
I've found a good protein rich diet, warm, clean water and a bit of salt is good for fin wounds.
Adrienne
Re inbreeding, yes you can and in theory can do so for about 4-5 generations. I have many years ago tried it and it resulted in weak, deformed fish with bodies decreasing in size from the third generation on. Once I outsourced different males there were no probs. You can pretty much say that for hobby breeders if the fish are the same age, or look the same then they are from the same spawn.

Really? I had fish from the same spawn that were twice the size of each other, maybe more. The smaller ones didn't make it but I read that it's not uncommon to have different sized fish from the same spawn.

Look - as in colouring, tail type.

Adrienne
you'd be very lucky to get any NZ bred to breed true unless all parents were imports of the same colour. Because so few females come in breeders need to breed to other colours frequently.
