Gill
At the moment my large community tank has a thick layer (8cm) of brightwater gravel and i am thinking about getting some Yoyo loaches and from what i have read they prefer substrate they can burrow in. What would you recommend i use. The tank is planted at the moment so i don't want to rip it all apart but i would like to add a more suitable substrate where i can. N1CK
sand would be best, but it will naturally move to the bottom layer of gravel over time
Gill
I think its looking like i'm going to have to do a major change around then. Better get planning now.....
Southerrrngirrl
Yeah sand would be the best but I have that small rounded gravel in my tank and my Yoyo's seem to be able to dig around it in without too much problem.
Gill
My gravel isn't that small so what i think i will do is first get hold of sand or fine gravel and take out as much of the bigger gravel as i can, the plants are at the back so i will be able to add sand/fine gravel to 3/4 of the tank without too much of a problem. Gill
I have been looking around on that other site, would that Silica Sand be better than white chip marble???
Southerrrngirrl
White chip. Sounds sharp, is it? Loaches require fine sand or rounded gravel because of their sensitive barbels around their mouth.
Scottie841
Try some calsite sand/gravel it is fineish white and looks like sand but a bit bigger. Our yoyos like digging in it
