Caryl
Danios are really hardy and good for beginners. As are tiger barbs and golden barbs for a start. People often choose neons as they are pretty and cheap but they tend to die easily these days  It would be good to know what the big thing is. If it is a common or sailfin plec it will grow too big for the tank. Here's hoping it is a fully grown Ancistrus bristlenose instead 8)
Guest
Kribs as they'll breed easily and you can watch them raise their babies and move them around the tank which is awesome. Then some sort of livebearer like a platy as they have live babies every 4-6 weeks and eventually you'll get to see some little babies survive and then get some corys (bronze or pepperedd are really hardy). And then eventually youcan get some harder fish to keep alive like rams or something like that.
