TrevorW
Hi, One of my electric yellows was holding, I'm not sure for how long exactly. So yesterday i setup a 30 litre bare bottom tank with a filter, airstone, light and coral in it and put her in there. This evening I see her mouth is empty and there are eggs on the floor of the tank. Is that meant to happen? And do i put her back in the main tank now? Thanks, Trevor
smidey
no thats not how its supposed to happen. she should hold the eggs for around 3 weeks which will let them grow into free swimming fry. is this the first time she has held? I have found that juvenile females won't sucessfully hold until the second or third try.
TrevorW
O ok. Bugger. So I can just put her back in the main tank now and clean out the small one? And yeah it is the first time. Thanks
smidey
i have put eggs that have been dropped in a basket & they have grown into fry & been perfectly normal fish so give that a go. you have nothing to loose. yes you came put er back in the main tank to spawn again. si_sphinx
How big is she. I was lucky as mine have spawned at a young age, quite small, and never spat out the eggs. maybe another go at it and she should hopefully hold them the full term. Mine typically hold for 40 days at 25degs or around 30 at 28degs and release free swimming fry. If she has just dropped eggs then it has probably been less than 2 weeks so should be fine to put back in the tank, if your worried about her then feed her up for a week before putting her back in. TrevorW
Cool thanks for your help. Will see how it goes. Cheers
TrevorW
I've only had her since setting up my main tank 3 months ago or so. Shes about 7cm. Yea I'm pretty sure its been less than 2 weeks.
smidey
i strip mine at 18 or 19 days & the fry are free swimming without yoke sacks. at 15 days they still ahve yoke sacks but put in a net they just bob around until its absorbed. si_sphinx
I like to make my female drop them herself as its more natural and hopefully increases the chances of the fry not spitting their eggs too early when they are mature enough to breed
smidey
i am sure that the female would start releasing them after 24 days or so then collecting them again if she sensed danger. if she has held for 2 weeks or more they aren't going to drop them. at 15 days the fry can swim around, very un-co due to the egg sack but swimming no the less. i have also found that the quantity of fry decreases the longer the holding goes on, the sooner you strip the more you will have. ryanjury
There are different schools of thought on the stripping, I strip at between 2 and 3 weeks, this is the stage where the fry are most likely to survive and the female isn't too run down.. I have found sometimes the fish hold for a full month which runs the female down alot and also the fry come out half starved which cant be good for them. The biggest issue for me in letting the female get run down too much is that you have to remove her to fatten her back up again and then reintroduce her to the colony again which can be alot of stress as she has to fight for a place in the tank again. If the eggs are fertile you can make what is called an egg tumbler google "DIY egg tumbler" they are pretty simple to make and work really well Good luck and I am sure she will get it right with time. phoenix44
I just leave them to it. if the female is strong enough she will survive. the babies have to survive and hide in the tank if they want to live  it works really well. now where is that sad violin playing emoticon?
