AquaVitamins
Heya, well i have just had my 17th birthday & i have been given a bit of money which means i can finally start a new project. well not really a project, but i want to do something with my old 60L. My last 'project' was my 140 blue planet tank, i have finished stocking it with tetras, a golden spot pleco and 3 fighters ( 1 male and 2 female - but the females are a bit small so i don't think they are ready for breeding) I was thinking about making it into a fry rearing tank for when the betas breed. If i did that i have read i would need to separate the fry as they get aggressive, so i would need to buy some acrylic glass? Whats your ideas and views? What should i do with the tank? Ill keep a photo blog on here so you can track my progress Thanks for all your input guys its much appreciated!
Morcs
Maybe set it up as a multi purpose breeder - just a real basic barebottom setup with sponge filter and a heater. Then you can try and breed any small fish that you like - youd just need the extra bits pertaining to the habits of those fish (spawning mats, mops etc..) For fighters they are ok for a little while without separation, but eventually they will need separating by stacking that tank full of clear plastic bottles full of holes. AquaVitamins
Yea thats a good idea. My brother has some Bronze Corys that about 3 months ago lay eggs all over the glass, but they were all eaten cas we have no where to put them My thinking is that if they have spawned once they'll do it again. With the fighters, can you keep all the female fry together?
Guest
You can keep all the fighter fry together, males and everything but you can't take them out of the tank and put them back in otherwise they'll kill the one thats been seperated. All you need is a few hiding spots so if one gets agro the others can hide for a while. I'd use it for dwarf cichlids (apistos, rams) or kribs. You could plant it and have rocks and then just get a pair of something and watch them raise a little family of fry. Otherwise corys are good but you really need 2 tanks for them (one for the adults to breed and then one to grow out the fry.)
Morcs
Id be tempted to get a pair of Apistogramma Borellis to breed, there seem to be a few around at the moment. Ive got a lone one, such a nice fish

Morcs
their all labelled as borellis, but none of them look like pictures when you google them. Just googled Steel blue, looks like they are:

AquaVitamins
hahah thanks lol, 3rd 17th! nice Heres my current tank my 140L today i when to hutt pets to buy a foam filter thing, but they had a shelf of 50% off... i spent $70 the rock and the tall fake plants at the back are new, and the breeding net is also new Here are my fighters: They seem to be alright together, the male doesn't really chase the females too much, but i was wondering, do you think they are too small to mate? cas i want him to make a bubble nest!!! and have some fry to put in here: I have just set it up, i used the water from my 140L to mostly fill it and then just toped it up with tap water. The filter is really noisy though i will see if i can sleep with it on like that tonight, im hoping that i will find it maybe soothing? lol
Guest
You could try breed the male fighter with your biggest female fighter.
AquaVitamins
Oh yea, so .. Do i put them into the net floating in the main tank or relocate them to the 60L? Cheers
Guest
To breed them you condition them until they're both fat and healthy. Then put the Male in the 60 ltr tank so he can swim around and add some floating plants or a lid or whatever you want him to build a nest under. You then put the female into a clear container or something that he can see her but not attack her and wait until he builds a good nest. You can then release her into the tank with him and he'll first flare at her then chase and then attack her. (make sure you give her somewhere to hide). Eventually they'll breed then you take the female out and once the eggs are free swimming you take the male out.
AquaVitamins
Oh ok sounds fun, i'll give that a go. :bounce: I have a couple packets of blood worms in the freezer and i have plenty of flake food. would that be enough to 'condition' them? And once the have finished breeding and i put them back into the main tank, will they go back to their normal behavior? Thanks a bunch! I managed to condition mine on that, but try to make the blood worms seem 'live' (get some tweezers and make them chase it), When you put them back in your other tank they kinda get a bit depressed for a few days so it might be wise to seperate them good luck with breeding them
AquaVitamins
Cool thanks. Ill post pictures along the way. not sure when the 60L will b ready though, cas theres a new filter, but the waters old so im thinking give it a week? My brother is trying to spawn his corys, so if he manages that ill probably put the eggs in their as well. Ill get some shots of that as well. Cheers for the help. Guest
Yeah the male goes a bit depressed  . I'd put the female in the breeder net after she breeds just until she heals a bit as the males can watse them a bit. Otherwise they're really easy to breed. The fry are really small so you'll need microworms and bbs for them. Also to hatch cory eggs just put them in the breeder net with an airstone or by the filter to get water flow over them and you should get a good/100% hatch rate. I've currently got Panda cory eggs in my DIY egg hatcher and none of them have fungased so far.

AquaVitamins
Ok, So i have had the new tank going for a good 24 hours. And i have put my male in. I have also added in a huge rock decoration, just after i took the photo, because i heard that the females will need a place to hide. Question: What should the Ph of Wellingtons water be??? heres a shot of the test tube i was testing: All the other readings look fine
AquaVitamins
Ok i was having a think.. What is the next set to making my fighters spawn?       Heres my line of thinking : I have the male in the 60L, and i am going to condition him. Then i the female ready to transfer into the 60L and be put into the net cage thing. Once the male has shown interest, i let them get it on.. Then put the female in the net cage back into the main tank as well as the male. Feed the spawn on the fomented grass stuff. Question!! How long to i condition the male? How long do i leave them together in the 60L & how do i know if its not going well?? Cheers!
Guest
By the looks of it you males already conditioned enough. The females just need to be fat and healthy and once they see a male flaring and building a bubble nest then they full with eggs. Leave them in the breeding tank for about 5 day and if nothing happens just recondition him for 10 or so days. You'll know if it's notgoing well because he'll continuly chase and attack her for days and stop buliding a nest. The male will chase hera bit but not too much if she hides. AquaVitamins
Ok i have just put my biggest female into the 60L tank. She is swimming around inside the mesh net/cage thing. So far the male hasn't even noticed her, he is preoccupied chasing his reflexion up and down the glass.. Does it take a while to get things going ? or should i feed them blood worms now?
