Gill
Ummmmm not sure what my options are , my plants have taken off and are now blocking the light from the lights I have sitting on the glass under the hood. I am going to trim the plants, but I guess they will only grow again , I have ambullia and Indian fern and I think temple plant. So it’s good news the plants are finally growing well but now I need to look at getting some more light in the tank. How effective are the submersible lights, I think aqua one make them I don’t need anything that will support plant growth ,just some that will add some light to the tank. Thanks
phoenix44
just crop your plants, and then sell the cuttings or give them off on here. I know there are a few who are hunting for ambullia. those submersible lights are not for plants - merely aesthetic.
Gill
Chopping will have to happen ,but i dont want to chop too much, its the first time my plants have taken offfff. I want to try and get some light in the tanks to brighten it up under the forest!!!!
phoenix44
that's just the way plants work. if you crop them - then the entire plant gets light again and will keep growing. if the tank becomes dark cause all the upper leaves are blocking the light; then the base of the plants may wither away. the underwater lights are not of the correct spectrum to sustain plant growth. whetu
If you want to have more plants, just chop the tops off and re-plant them in the substrate and they will grow. But, like Phoenix said, if the light is blocked to the lower parts of the plants they will tend to lose their leaves and go all brown and yukky looking at the bottom, despite being green and bushy on top. Also your plants are absorbing nutrients (like nitrate) out of the water as they grow. It is good to trim them and remove them from the tank because you are removing nitrate at the same time and that helps to keep your water nice. If you leave them in there and they start to go brown and deteriorate, they are re-releasing the chemicals into the water instead of keeping them tied up in the plant. Gill
Thanks for the advice. I have chopped them and replanted in the other area of the tank which was bare. I think i am still going to see about a submersible light ,I realise it wont help the plants grow but I think it would look good having some more light in the tank. When I get round to it i will take some photos and post up. Took some last night but the glass needed a clean so the pics don't look very good. :bounce:
