Guest
My cockatoos bred again today and I've set up a tank with cycled water and a sponge filter and all that and I'm going to move the fry into that tank once they hatch. This will be the first time I really try to raise them in their own tank so I'm hoping to only get 40-50 babies hatch instrad of the usual 100+ . But I was wondering when the fry are older will they all look the same (the parents are both triple red x wild F1). Will some have more triple red or more wild colouring than the others? Also is it possible to have 1 male between a few females to breed or do they pair up like the kribs? I heard the females will steal each others fry and one will end up with 70 or so while the other has 5
N1CK
Good luck with the fry :bounce: :bounce: , I love these fish and can't wait to get a pair but that will have to wait  (I have enough tanks in my room atm  ) From what I've read with there colours you're probably going to get a mix of all different reds but am not sure about the wild, other than that I guesss you're going to have to play the waiting game :bounce:
Guest
Thanks. Hopefully I'll have good success raising them. The tank setup I'm using usually works well raising fry plus I'll be doing small daily water changes so I can't wait till they hatch (the parents usually hatch them and get them to free swimming but they slowly disappear). At this stage if I can raise them I'll be keeping 5 or so pairs (or 3 trios if a male will breed with 2 females) but the rest I'll be selling. MarkLB
Also is it possible to have 1 male between a few females to breed or do they pair up like the kribs? They are harem breeders so it's best to have 1 male with 2 or 3 females.
Guest
Sweet :bounce: :bounce: . Whats a good number of females per males? They haven't even hatched and I'm thinking of ho many I'll keep to breed   .
ryanjury
They are a "harem breeder" but do require a larger tank to be successful in it, otherwise the first female to breed beats the snot out of the remaining female/s unless they tank is big enough for the female on eggs to have her own turf around them.. Colour will vary in the babies, myself and a friend have fish from the same line we got pick of the first cross from the breeder and since then have selected the best to keep the lines going and have some very good colour coming out now, will try for some pics of my 2 males when I have some time.. Guest
Ok, what size tank should be used? What if I do 75 x 40cm thank a tank full of rocks, plants and caves?
Guest
Looks like most of the eggs have hatched today (probably 10-20 to hatch). The females got a little clump of 50-70 fry in her rock cave so I'll have to wait till she moves them into a pot thats in the tank and then I'll move the fry to there own tank where I'll hopefully be able to raise them. Guest
Sweet as. I'll advertise them on here first if I manage to raise them. I'll be keeping a pair for my comunity tank and a group for there own breeding tank. How many could I keep in a 70x30x40cm tank? It will have 4-5 caves made out of rocks plus a few plants (java fern and tiger lotus's).
