okie dokie, i have FINALLY found somebody that sells pool filter sand 25kgs for $26, my question is um how an earth do u add it to a tank thats already got water and fish in it, i got nothing on the bottom so i dont have to worry about that lol, is silica sand pool filter sand? :o

i added silica sand to my tank recently - fully populated - heres what i did from start to finish

* washed the sand - i had 4 half buckets and made sure the water was running clear in each of them

* took about 50% water out of my tank and put that into a chilli bin

* moved my fish and heater to the chilli bin

* turned off my filter

* removed all my plants and stones etc

* removed a further 25% water from the tank

* shovelled the sand into the tank slowly

* arranged the plants etc

* waited for the sand to fully settle

* added 75% of the water from my chilli bin back into the tank

* made sure the temp etc were all normal in the tank

* then i just topped up the tank with fresh water and voila - all done :)

If you add your location to your profile chelle321 (click on user control panel at top right of screen then 'profile') someone may be able to give you a specific supplier to try. We will be heading to Dunedin in a couple of weeks. Are you along the route? Happy to pick up and deliver some if you find it cheaper in ChCh

thanks for that skippy, now i just have to go buy it lol

no worries - there might be a better way of doing it but that seemed ok - i guess with the least amount of hassle for the fish etc it was pretty good - it took about 2 or 3 hours to complete from start to finish - just dont make it snow in your tank like i did to begin with - bubble walls and sand dont really mix too well :lol: just sit them on top of the sand if you have any.

lol yeah its only an extra $9 anyway, im not worried, and in no hurry to get it yet

Cool, but yes, drain your tank as much as possible and take the inhabitants out.

Because you are doing it this way I would wash the sand even more thoroughly, then you can just dump it on, smooth it out, and it should settle quite quickly, then fill the tank up with a hose (if you dont have the means to store the old water), and get a heater (and any spare heaters you have) working on it straight away), by the time the tank is up to temperature, the sand shouldve settled, then you can turn your filter(s) on and re-add the fish :)

Hi Morcs,i know this is a bit of an old post,I just did a search on words 'tinted sides'and brought up your tank ,I wanted to know did you find the tank 'too dark' looking ,were you happy with it? Im getting a tank built soon ,thinking weather to have tinted back/sides or just go with clear glass
