TM
Will the toxins from soft corals effect most sps? Which soft corals are more toxic to acros? does any one have any good kinks to articles regarding this. Does anyone have a tank with mainly sps with little skimming? lduncan
As far as direct contact, mushrooms are by far the most potent stingers of acros, but they are virtually harmless when not in direct contact. Chemicals classed as terpenes are responsible for stony coral deaths. Typical concentrations around soft corals are around 1 - 5 ppm. Surprisingly concentrations of around 5-10ppm around stoney corals for 8 hours straight will cause 100% mortality. The amount of terpenes released by soft corals is very species specific within genera, but generally sacrophyton and lemnalia are the two majors, sinularia to a lesser extent. lduncan
Forgot Lobophytum in that list, it's probably has some of the most toxic species. Layton
reef
Will the toxins from soft corals effect most sps? It is well known that many soft corals contain numerous toxic compounds such as sarcophines, terpenoids and diterpenoids. variuos transplant experiments using soft coral have shown effects on stony coral. in some cases, inter colony distances of 30cm resulted in stunted growth and death of stony coral. Which soft corals are more toxic to acros? lobophytum etc. can vary , however if you use carbon it will help to reduce toxins. does any one have any good kinks to articles regarding this. Any decent coral book will have the info. the reef aquarium by julian sprung is good. Does anyone have a tank with mainly sps with little skimming? No sure, but all the best tanks with acros have huge skimmers and not many fish, however tanks that run miracle mud also seem to have nice acros,
lduncan
As far as small skimmers on sps tanks... you'll be able to keep them, as long as the usual water parameters are under control and there is enough light and water flow. I don't think it would be particularly easy. Nitrates need to be at zero for good best colouration. Layton
Pies
I pretty much concur with all that. In the wild you often see SPS (Acro) next to sacrophytons (sp?) but I have never seen them near the others (denchrinia?). As Layton said, mushrooms KILL acros fast. If I could have a ZERO mushroom tank, I would. My tank is 99% Stoney corals, the only exception is 1x sacrophyton and mushrooms I can't get rid off. I use a skimmer matched to the size of my tank (read large), run carbon etc too. Most agree that low nutrient tanks are best for stoney coral growth, hence they often use large skimmers and phosphate removing reactors etc to get the nutrient levels as low as possible. There are a few articles on REEFKEEPING ONLINE by Eric Bourneman about the relationship between stoney corals and soft corals. Could be a good place to start.
