Fish help please

Not sure if anyone can help? but thought I would ask away anyway. :D

This morning I notice heaps of little white eggs laid all around my tank (attached to the glass), looks like some have been eaten though, but still a lot there.

I have no idea who the culprit is who has lain all these eggs!??!

In the tank I have 2 angels, 3 tiger barbs, 3 albino catfish, 2 kuhli loaches (well had, just noticed 1 is dead  ) 5? glowlight tetras and 5? neon tetras, 1x female fighter fish. 2x Apple Snails (which lay heaps of pinkish eggs up above the surface)

One of the glowlights has a huge stomach, and has done for quite a while now, and I notice that its down the bottom of the tank acting kinda strange?

Oh and its a 200Litre (ish) tank, I don't want to over crowd it, but other fish can I put in there? That will get along? I like the look of ballon mollies? Ghost knife fish? Open to ideas....

I suspect the last Kuhli loach, 1 albino catfish, 1 tiger barb and the female fighter might not be around for too much longer, as other fish I purchased around the same time over the last few months have slowly started to die off - I'm guessing old age? They would be about 2-3 years old? Not sure how long they live for?

Thanks :)

Ghost Knife fish grows quite large apparently approx 50cm. It will also eat anything it can fit in its rather large mouth. That means your tetras. And probably Kuhli loach. Maybe even the corys. :( Tank mates for ghost knife fish are also recommended to not be fin nippers, so thats your Tiger Barbs. Mollies like a bit of salt, not sure how well that will go down with the loach/es

I suggest putting more glowlights in, they really are quite cool little fish. I have some myself. I think a big group of glowlights would look really good schooling together.

Or more Kuhli loaches, its recommended they are kept in groups of at least 6, apparently they are supposed to be less shy in groups.

your Kuhli loach should live longer than a couple of years.. so why not get him some friends and you'll see him more often. They are such characters and I think are so neat.

Mine come out day and night .. as soon as they smell food!

They come out all together and swim and dance like they're following a ballet routine lol.

Ok thanks, I wasn't sure how long they lived for. Kuhli loach's are one of my favourites, I actually got them from Tauranga about 2 years ago. I'm not sure if the pet shops down here don't sell them or if they just don't have them in stock when I go in. I would love to get more of them though for sure. Mine did the same, they are really neat to watch! :D

I've always like the look of the ghost knife fish, so aw thats a shame.

I've had tropical's in my big tank for about 4 years now, and before that I had a small tank with a few tropical's. Never really learned about compatibly though. I normally will see a fish I like, and just go for it, and so far they have all gotten on well with no problems... But I don't really want to carry on with that way of thinking, so I thought I should get some advice. :D

I like the glowlights :D Might get some more of them.

What about sharks? I had one in my small tank, and he seemed to get on ok with the other fish, but he did become quite territorial and claimed the log tunnel as his... He was black with red fins.

I know tiger barbs like to be in bigger groups too, so might get some more of them..??

yep Kuhlis can love as long as 10 yrs plus with the right care.

That shark sounds like a rainbow.. I got my eye on one of them for my "big tank" - still in my minds eye at this stage.

Some petstores have Kuhlis without you even realising it.. unless there's an obvious sign on the window or it's a bare tank.. they are easy to miss!

I was at HFF a couple of weekends ago and they were all piled on top of each other at the top by the heater or filter ..almost didn't spot them.

Yeah I wanted a ghost knife until I researched them a bit more and decided it wasn't the best idea at the present. They are very cool fish though.

Tis a good idea to research the compatability of fish as well as what tank requirements and water preferences they have. Of course some LFS's won't advise you on this because a) they themselves don't know or b) are just there to make a sale so will tell you everything can go together. I know they did that to me. Thats how I ended up with a Rainbow Shark in a 34 litre tank :o

Sounds like you had a Rainbow Shark. A rainbow shark would probably be fine in your tank. I have one, he's quite territorial, but has never caused too much stress or any damage. Just provide lots of hiding spaces. Better to have large tanks, I found mine was a lot grumpier when he was in his little tank.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yes it was a rainbow shark.

Got one today actually... The lady at the petshop told me that he would eat any fish in my tank... some how I don't think so.. The last one I had didn't. Also got another angel & two corys. Couldn't find any Kuhli's :(

Had a few deaths while I was away on holiday, my mum had to deal with that. Lost 1 angel, 2 tiger barbs and my 2 apple snails. No idea why? Over 2 days they just died. But the other fish are all fine, happily swimming around.
