SamH
I read that in the wild, Kribs come from neutral or slightly acidic rivers and streams although many people will recommend keeping them above 7.5. You shouldn't use beach sand because it could contain chemicals that are toxic to the fish. Using a sand like river sand or silica sand is just as good and is definatly safe. I saw a 25kg bag of sand at Mitre10 for around $7. Good luck

I am assuming you will be collecting it in Wanganui or maybe Turakina beach? The only thing in the sand that may be bad is salt, and the amount of salt in sand from the sand dunes is hardly worth worrying about. You may find smal particles of shell , but with the added driftwood in the tank it shouldnt make too much difference.
Mr McFish
Yea Turakina beach will go and get some if there is a nice day any time soon. I will test the ph before I buy some Kribs any way.
supasi
Sorry , to answer you first question. Darker colour substrate brings out the colour in most fish. I have local beach sand in my Axylotl tank and it looks great. I think kribs would be quite happy in it.
Mr McFish
Looks good. Have you ever measured the ph of it?
lmsmith
If you can't be bothered collecting sand, buy builders sand from a hardware store. It's about $8 from Bunnings for a 25kg bag. Just rinse it well, it's pH neutral and is fish safe; I use it in 8 tanks.
