mr pleco
interesting thread ppl and alot of opinions which is good to debate cant really say whos right or wrong as you have all made valid points at stages in yr comments Zebra plecos are another great example, rare and expensive, but not impossible to get and not impossible to breed either. I know there's at least one US supplier who ships internationally who has them available for $180-250US each. Yes initially it sounds like a bit, but if you forked out the money and had the only breeding stock in the country it wouldn't be impossible to make it back. But nobody likes to think big (or invest big) and push the hobby along. I have a lot of yep great idea and looked into this but it HAS to be on the MAF allowed list before you can import and seen as its not nothing ANYONE can do till it is shame but reality the thing to be VERY careful of is not to upset the retailers by taking away their market It is their living and if we make it not worth their while, they will simply move to other markets so that they can still put food on the table yep couldnt agree more barrie alot of plp are in it for a fast buck and hence trade me but these ppl seem to come and go and if it affects yr local Lfs tto much and they shut down we are all gonna loose point and case was today my airpump died and if it wasnt for Hollywood Fish Farm MT roskill having some mini air compressors in stock on the notion that maybe "someone " might want one alll my fish would be in very big trouble right now but 1 hour later it was replaced and thousands of dollars worth of fish saved , I know its only one smalll point of whats being discussed but without Lfs our hobby is gone because importers will go with the LFs and the only fish available WILL be the ones we breed nearly all my original ple*o stock has come form LFS yep payed a premuim price for them but thats the price im prepared to pay to ensure these guys stay available and if i can breed them then the price should lower point and case when i first bought my L066 king tiger from an LFS it cost me $175 now having bred them and sold some back to the shops you can buy the same species from HFF for $55 thats how it needs to work because we and LFS can live side by side if done the right way Go and honestly talk to yr LFS some time to understand what problems they face with importing/MAF and so on then maybe you can see from both sides of the coin instead of sometimes only seeing one side and to be honest if there are LFS out there that have big houses and multi million dollar houses ..good on em i say ... they took the risk and they have benefitted the gain if anyone here thinks its money for jam perhaps they should open a shop and truley see hwat its like to operate
Discusguru
I guess for you it must just be a hobby, but for some of us its a passion.... Very well said People always complained about not been able to get their hands on the rare fish. When the importer bring them in, nobody wants to buy them because they say it's too expensive. Some hobbyist will will get get either a male or a female and start crossing them with other strain (reason too expensive to guy a proper pair) thus butchering the true strain. ron
David R
yep great idea and looked into this but it HAS to be on the MAF allowed list before you can import and seen as its not nothing ANYONE can do till it is shame but reality My bad, didn't realise they weren't on the list! There are other examples though, fish that could be imported but aren't.
phoenix44
that sounds like a text book reply rather than one that is necessarily correct to be honest, but after last night my brain does not want to function today so im not gonna argue, lol. oh good.. now that this topic has split I can say this: my "answer" is not from any text book, but ill be sure you send you a copy when im done with it. your views are almost straight out of a junior economics text with little insight into a specific industry. perhaps you should do some more research and know how the system here works when it comes to getting fish off importers as a retailer. you will find that few retailers are also importers.. they all have gains from specialisation.
