Midas
Aquired a gold saum/green terror today. Another aggressive American cichlid to the collection (Midas, Jag, J.D., Texas, Convicts)
Benny
hope you got a male! very impressive when they get older. Did you get the one from the tank next to the one with the juvenile arowana?
Midas
nope I didn't get it from that tank but one of the ones in the middle. Not sure what sex it is but it was the biggest one there. Do you know how to sex them??
Benny
nah i am not too sure. I myself aquired 2 uaru today in the most unassuming of places. i walked into animates and asked about these 2 cichlids, which they had no idea about. So I got 2 for $30. Caryl
We used to have a jaguar cichlid but she got real stroppy as she grew bigger (she was sold as something else and was supposed to be a lot smaller!) so had a 3ft tank to herself. We felt sorry for her as she looked lonely so we gave her to Redwood Aquatics (Christchurch) where she promptly mated with a male jaguar and destroyed their beautifully landscaped tank! Benny
speaking of aggressive cichlids- have any of you wet pets regulars seen the big red devil and red tail cat square off? when I was there the red devil kept on charging at the red tail cat but then backing off. Midas
That red devil seems to square off against most of the other fish in that tank at some stage or another. Makes sure they keep their distance I think. When you were there did you see the half size Jag cichlid in one of the bottom 6ft display tanks that had several oscars in it? They are now selling it for $50.
Benny
yeah i saw that. although I was looking at the JD more. he looks really small compared to all those oscars!
Midas
yeah but he seems to do ok in there.
Benny
can we get dovii here?
Midas
don't know, never seen any. I don't think there on the allowable import list are they? have to check, not that that seems to stop some fish. Just need to find an old symonym.
Benny
indeed it doesnt stop fish from getting in here.
Caryl
I think our jaguar cichlid was sold to us as a dovii.
Benny
dovis are apparently the baddest cichlid on the planet.
Caryl
The jaguar wasn't the goodest either
Midas
that green terror I got is a female. She decided to spawn by herself the other day. Quite surprised really, considering she is only just 2 inches long.
Warren
I had the same thing happen too. It even guarded the eggs from nothing (since it was the only fish in the tank) even after the eggs had fungus all over them.
Midas
yeah this one tried to guard them from the severum in the tank which is much bigger than her at about 4 inches long. Made a good effort but the severum was too big and too strong and ate all of them within about 10 minutes of her laying them. She wasn't impressed.
