Dave+Amy
I'm thinking about converting my 200L grow out Discus tank into another planted tank, I'm thinking about getting say about 6/8 Angels (same type) and some loaches...and GBAs etc for house keeping. What other fish could I get that would suit this tank if I didn't want Angels? It's quite a deep tank (built to suit Discus previously). I'm not into small fish...suggestions PLEASE
phoenix44
but you do want angels? :bounce: peruvians!!!! if you can get some. they are awesome. expensive, but really worth it. and they are hardy.. ive seen some species tanks online, and they look spectacular. HorseFreak
I would say clown loaches (is that their name) but your have already suggested them. Not very clued up on big fish, I only have sucker fish, guppies and Simese Fighters.
Dave+Amy
I thought most advertised as Peruvians aren't actually Peruvians but Scalares or something?? Would love to create a species tank for Angels with heaps of driftwood and branches...I'm thinking I'd be willing to spend at the most $20each for one small Angel if I'm to buy 8 of them (thought about doing a Discus tank with just one strain but that added up to be too much lol). Bear in mind I got to buy a new canister and lights etc...don't talk me into buying anything expensive Dave's on verge of cutting up my eftpos card What other fish could go with Angels? Dave+Amy
I would say clown loaches (is that their name) but your have already suggested them. Not very clued up on big fish, I only have sucker fish, guppies and Simese Fighters. my last experience with guppies - bought home 7 (5 males and 2 females) ended up with 100s in the short year I had them had to continuously get rid of them. Plus I find livebearers annoying 'cos they clog up the filtration systems with their babies
phoenix44
i think it was the other way round. you can get peruvians i think. the real altums cost much more, and i think someone was selling the peruvians as altums. im not 100% sure though. i didn't check out all the drama back then  what about hatchets and angels? or do you not like the squish look of hatchets? or cardinals?
Dave+Amy
hahaha definately not getting anymore Cardinals (sold my 18 cardinals to JimR already).. Yes it was the Altum Vs Peruvian debucle (now that I'm recollecting)..but I have seen an amazing species tank of just Altums on an overseas tank decorating company's site (trying to imitate lol) Or even I was thinking those white Angels with pink cheeks in a tank with dark/black gravel and green Amazon swords? Those mono Angels look pretty cool too but don't see them for sale often
phoenix44
monos will gobble up plants. that and they do best in brackish or atleast brackish-ish water. commonly available if you want them. u mean blushing angels?
Dixon1990
Im pretty sure the common name 'Peruvian Altum' Is a Scalare Varient. Have a read of this: http://finarama.com/tba/chronicles/peruvianscalare.htm
phoenix44
yep. that's the one... get them  8)
Dixon1990
They pretty cool.
phoenix44
*nods. they are not the real altum, but a very nice species never-the-less. I have 2, I'd like more.. but then id need a bigger tank.
Dave+Amy
are we talking about Blushing Angels or Peruvians? How much do these retail usually? I don't care if I have to raise them from juveniles. And what's a good number of these to keep 'cos they get a bit territorial too don't they? I'm not fussed as long as their finnage is perfect (MUST HAVE nice complete long fins )....maybe not leopards or marbles, like the more simplistic looking Angels. Who breeds what type of Angels on this forum?
phoenix44
peruvians. im going to start a thread asking for confirmation of ID.

Dave+Amy
so it looks like the stripes on the true Altums are wider than those Scalares? and less dots on back? Does anyone here breed true Altums though? And if so how much do they range?
Dixon1990
Dont think any pures are available here
phoenix44
neither. doubt there are any pures. the dotty ones look like peruvians - BUt mine dont have that snooty looking face which makes me think they may be a mix. still a nice fish when they are larger though. Dave+Amy
well it definately looks like Angels for my tank..with a tank at 200L should I stick to small Loaches? B'cos I'll definately want a small troop of loaches to keep snail population down - it's a shame I do like the look of Clown Loaches though
newfisher
well it definately looks like Angels for my tank..with a tank at 200L should I stick to small Loaches? B'cos I'll definately want a small troop of loaches to keep snail population down - it's a shame I do like the look of Clown Loaches though I have just brought 10 angels from trademe they are stunning I went hunting the LFS and these are so much nicer. I went for Koi\Ghost and Black and think I like the Black ones best. Mine are in with Clowns. Animates have a special on clowns this week 3 for $30.00. The Angels were 10 for $50.00 and are about 5CM in body size. Same size ones at the LFS were $20.00 each.
Dave+Amy
yeah I saw that on TM too but I want all my Angels to be of the same species....there were these beautiful pure white Angels with pink cheeks (Blushing Angels??) before on TM which I really liked but haven't seen them for a while. Or just Peruvians will do I guess...Could you post a pic of what the black ones you got look like NewFisher?
newfisher
sure I'll do that tonight. They were probably fromt he same guy went rount to pick Angels up and he had tanks and tank full of different Angles & Discus.
